causes

Blood on the anus does not necessarily mean something "bad". A variety of causes, such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistulas, intestinal polyps, inflammatory bowel disease and much more can be responsible.

If there is blood on the toilet paper after the stool, this can have different causes. A doctor's visit is urgently advised. (Image: absolutimages / fotolia.com)

hemorrhoids

Everyone has hemorrhoids. These are so-called erectile tissue, which are located in the rectum to seal the anus. Only when these cavernosum enlarge, complaints such as blood on the anus can occur. In this context, it is then referred to as hemorrhoids, which would have to be called properly Hämorrhoidalleiden. Those affected suffer from itching, oozing, burning at the anus, anus pain or possibly bloody stool.

The physiological hemorrhoids can be widened, for example due to poor nutrition, prolonged constipation and excessive pressure during bowel movements. Also in connection with pregnancy, these symptoms occur frequently. Hemorrhoidal disease is still a taboo topic. The affected patients do not like to talk about it and usually do not go to the doctor until the symptoms are really severe. Recurring blood on the anus must be taken seriously.

anal fissure

The term "fissure" means "gap". Thus, an anal fissure is a cleft, a tear in the anal canal skin. Possible causes of this rather unpleasant disease are hemorrhoids, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, laxative abuse and anal intercourse.

Those affected suffer from painful bowel movements with subsequent burning, bright blood on the anus, itching and spasms of the sphincter. Every bowel movement becomes a challenge. For fear of it, the sphincter cramps more and more, the bowel movement is held back. A vicious circle begins. An anal fissure is very unpleasant and painful, but usually does not mean "bad". However, the mentioned symptoms should definitely be clarified in order to rule out a serious illness. With an anal fissure it is essential to ensure regular and soft bowel movements. The doctor prescribes ointments that numb the skin. In the chronic form, drugs are used to relax the sphincter.

Intestinal polyps and diverticula can also trigger bleeding. (Photo: elviragerecht / fotolia.com)

polyps

Intestinal polyps consist of mucous membrane that bulges into the intestinal lumen. They are either just a few millimeters in size, have a style, are larger or assume a shaggy shape. These structures are found predominantly in the colon and rectum. They usually consist of glandular tissue that is benign, but can also degenerate. Therefore colon polyps should always be removed. Often these are discovered by their symptomlosen course only in a colonoscopy. Possible symptoms include slimy stools, blood on the anus (small amounts of blood in the stool), diarrhea and spasmodic abdominal pain. Colon polyps are mainly affected by older patients. Heavy, fatty or sugar-rich and low-fiber meals, increased alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, obesity, nicotine and a genetic disposition favor the development of intestinal polyps.

intestinal inflammation

Inflammatory bowel disease affects the colon or the small intestine. The Latin terms for this are enteritis (small intestinal inflammation) and colitis (colitis). Causes for both variants are viruses (e.g., noroviruses, rotaviruses, adenoviruses) or bacteria (e.g., Salmonella). Another cause is food allergy or taking antibiotics. The symptoms that are associated with intestinal inflammation are vomiting, fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, mucus or blood in the stool.

Chronic inflammatory bowel disease

Also, inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. may be associated with blood on the anus, but the source of bleeding here is usually in the area of the intestine.

Ulcerative colitis
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic intestinal inflammation that exclusively affects the large intestine. The real causes of ulcerative colitis are still unclear. A genetic disposition is assumed. The sufferers suffer from seizure-like diarrhea, which mucus and blood is added. There are also abdominal cramps, weight loss and fatigue. This disease is still not curable. The therapy aims to alleviate the symptoms and reduce the amount of seizure activity.

Crohn's disease
Crohn's disease begins, as opposed to ulcerative colitis, in the rectum and can spread in the worst case to the mouth. Also in this disease, the causes are not yet known. Familial clustering and genetic predisposition are discussed. It has been established that smoking may favor the occurrence of this inflammatory bowel disease. Those affected suffer from diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, nausea and fever episodes. The chair can be mixed with blood. Also, this disease is not curable and the therapy also aims to alleviate the symptoms of those affected and to minimize the inflammation.

Analvenenthrombose

An anal venous thrombosis is a thrombosis in the area of the venous plexus, which is located around the anus. This has nothing to do with hemorrhoids. The knot that forms can be as small as a grain of rice, but also pigeon-sized. Sudden pain and a massive foreign body and pressure sensation are among the associated, discomfort. The nodule can burst, causing blood to enter the anus and allow the blood plug to escape.

Causes of anal venous thrombosis are long sitting, constipation, diarrhea, unhealthy diet (low fiber, high in sugar, too much animal, etc.), massive pressing or persistent coughing and anal intercourse. Long sitting on a damp, damp surface, massive alcohol consumption and hot spices are also among the causes. This unpleasant disease can occur not least because of the pressure in the abdomen during pregnancy, but also during delivery, by strong pressing. As a rule, anal venous thrombosis is a harmless affair. In severe pain and larger lumps, these are surgically opened and the thrombus removed. Painkillers are analgesics and ointments that have an anesthetic effect.

Anal fistula and anal abscess

An anal fistula is an artificially created or disease-related gait between two hollow organs or between an organ and the body surface. In an anal fistula the anus is connected to the skin surface through a corridor. An anal abscess is a pus-filled cavity in the anal area. As a rule, the disease process is preceded by inflammation. If this spreads further, an abscess arises. If this bursts spontaneously, a fistula can develop. In a long-lasting illness, a gangrene of fistulas can form.

Anal abscesses are very painful. They are associated with swelling, redness and possibly also with fever. If a fistula has formed, the secretion can expire and the pain disappear. This is noticeable by soiled underwear. As a rule, abscesses are surgically opened and the fistula tracts are removed.

Diverticulum in the intestine

Diverticula are protuberances in the wall of a hollow organ. Here is talk of intestinal diverticula. These occur mainly in the colon. If they occur frequently, the term diverticulosis is used. These protuberances do not necessarily cause discomfort. However, if this is the case, the sufferers suffer from chair irregularities, abdominal pain and feeling of fullness. If the diverticula become inflamed, blood may appear on the anus. There are also symptoms such as fever, severe pain and constipation. These complaints must be taken seriously and it should promptly see a doctor.

To protect yourself from diverticulitis, it is important to ensure a healthy diet that is low in animal matter and high in fiber. Sufficient hydration and regular, supple bowel movements are important. In order to counteract a hard chair, the use of psyllium is often recommended.

Colon and rectal carcinoma (colon and rectal cancer)

Blood on the anus may at worst indicate a colon or rectal carcinoma. A genetic disposition and a diet that is low in fiber are among the possible causes of both cancers. The symptoms of colon and rectal carcinomas are mostly noticeable late. A constant change of diarrhea and constipation should necessarily be taken and examined. But mostly these symptoms are ignored. In the further course there is added blood in the stool, abdominal cramps and later weight loss, reduced general condition and bleeding anemia. Diffuse low back pain may indicate metastasis.

anal carcinoma

An anal carcinoma is a rare carcinoma that occurs in the anal canal or anal border. Symptoms include the following: foreign body sensation, pain, changes in bowel habits, itching, continence disorders, and blood on the anus (bloody stool). This carcinoma can infiltrate adjacent organs.
