Determine worm infestation

How do we determine the infestation with worms? It is estimated that over two billion people worldwide are affected by parasitic worms. Not always, however, the parasites are as insidious as the fox tapeworm, which we often notice as the wrong host only after many years, when the disease is already well advanced.

Illustrated here is the infection with pinworm, which mostly affects children. It is our most common worm disease. (Image: Kateryna_Kon / fotolia.com)

The colonization with worms often causes a strong itching in the anus region, here the eggs are deposited by the worms. Home remedy for Afterjucken can provide relief here. With a bit of luck, you can find clearly visible components of the worms in the feces. However, with the modern washdown toilets, optical chair control is difficult. The advantage of a high rinse is therefore the clear visibility of faeces changes. If there is a suspicion of a worm infestation, an immediate visit to the doctor is necessary. With the help of a stool sample the suspicion can then be examined more closely.

Hygienic measures

Attention, the worm eggs can also be inhaled - when washing or cleaning contaminated clothing so a surgical mask should be worn to prevent the own contagion safely. Although the ingredients of the drugs are very effective against the adult worm, they have little effect against the larvae and eggs of the worms. Every conventional therapy must therefore be repeated at intervals of three weeks (or six weeks, depending on the type of worm).

If a family member has captured the worms, it is likely that they will be infected by close family members of the same household. The entire family should therefore be included in the study to avoid recurrent infections. If the child reconnects despite treating the entire family, the child's environment (nursery, circle of friends, school class, etc.) must also be included in the investigation.

If there is such a close contact between animal and human as shown in the picture, they should be sure to regularly give their pets worm cures to prevent transmission of worms. (Image: absolutimages / fotolia.com)

Procedure for infestation

If the suspicion of a worm infection has been confirmed by the doctor, he prescribes suitable deworming medications. In addition to conventional medicine, many naturopathic home remedies can also help against the worms. However, some of these remedies are clearly too strong for use in children. The following are home remedies whose use is easy and which are partly suitable for children.

Different worms

No matter which worm it is - each of these worm species must be treated. They are parasitic parasites who feed solely and solely on our own resources - the body of the host. Coils and tapeworms are much more dangerous than the widespread children's pinworms.

Signs of pinworms

Often a colonization with the pinworm goes completely unnoticed. It is believed that up to 30 percent of all children and about 10 percent of adults carry this parasite. The increased infestation triggers stomachache, disorders of bowel movements such as diarrhea, weight loss and general malaise. Dead worms may be found in pajamas or bedding. The most reliable is the visual control of the bowel movement, as the worms in the feces are clearly recognizable as one to three centimeters long thin threads. Further down in the text you will find more information about the other worms.

To make the grapefruit seed extract, the seeds are first ground and then an extract is made from it. Not only against worms, but also against fungi it acts reliably in our body. (Image: sachi_yn / fotolia.com)

Extract of grapefruit seeds

Grapefruit seed extract is vegan. It is obtained industrially from the kernels and shells of grapefruit and serves not only as a strengthening for the defenses, but is effective against bacteria, parasites, viruses and intestinal fungi. As essence, it should only be diluted and not used neat, as the extract can cause irritation in sensitive skin. There are also finished dry extracts in the trade, which are in tablet form ingestible. For small children, breastfeeding and pregnant women, however, it is not suitable due to lack of studies.

pumpkin seeds

Ground pumpkin seeds can simply be sprinkled over moist animal feed, but we humans eat the whole kernels. They contain the valuable amino acid cucurbitin, which even helps against tapeworm infestation. Especially for sensitive pets, this can be a good supplement to the regular chemical deworming treatments if the kernels are regularly added to the feed. Even children can be given the seeds, they have no side effects.

Papaya seeds

Everyone knows the fruit of the papaya, but you do not know what to do with the seeds. They are absolutely edible and taste slightly peppery. They have been shown in studies to be very effective against acute maggot and roundworm infestation in the gastrointestinal tract, so they should be eaten chewed several times a day in suspected worms. They not only work against existing worm infections, but also preventive. Especially if other family members are infected by an infection, the rest of the family can protect themselves so preventively.

The papaya cores contain, among others, carpain, oleic acid, mustard oils, palmitic acid, flavonoids and the enzyme papain. (Image: fpic / fotolia.com)

Garlic Cure

The well-known garlic is a proven home remedy. It can lower blood pressure and stimulates our immune system. It also protects the blood vessels and also works against stubborn worm infestations.

An application with milk is rather unusual, but it can help. As a home remedy for worms, five crushed garlic cloves are mixed with a cup of milk. After twelve hours, this mixture is then ready to drink. The brew must be drunk for three weeks. If you do not like the taste combination, you can cook the garlic for twenty minutes and mix it with a little honey. Now drink it every morning on an empty stomach and only eat after two hours - not exactly tasty, but very helpful.

Garlic suppository & enema

The garlic enema can be just as effective. Peel 12 toes and cut into thin slices. Pour with half a liter of boiling water, let cool to 40 ° C. Drain off the liquid and let it run in rectally using an irrigator.

Another option often described as a home remedy is the suppository, for which a clove of garlic is peeled, then slightly grated and then inserted into the anus with the help of some coconut oil. The garlic disinfects against fungi and bacteria and thus reduces the itching. The coconut oil is anti-parasitic against the worms. You can use the cure for ten days, preferably directly after the bowel movement. These disposable gloves offer to prevent re-infection by worm eggs.

Nigella

The oil of black cumin can lower blood pressure as a remedy and helps with countless skin diseases. It has an anti-allergic effect, strengthens our immune system and contains many valuable unsaturated fatty acids. Even against worms, it acts as a reliable home remedy. For some people, the taste of the oil is quite strict, but fortunately, the black cumin oil is already ready to buy in capsules.

Against an application in pregnant women and children speaks nothing. The caraway oil is "vaporized" over the entire body after absorption in the stomach and literally expels the worms. It also helps the body in inflammatory processes in the tissues that were triggered by the worms. In studies with mice, the two-week administration of the black cumin oil showed a reduction in the number of worms, larvae and eggs in the host animal. It is best to take it on an empty stomach every morning, and only distort our breakfast at the earliest one hour.

Helpful fruits and vegetables

The medical worm cure can be well supported by pineapple, papaya and carrots. These foods contain substances that worms do not like very much. Before the actual meals a large piece of pineapple, papaya or even a carrot should be distorted. Especially carrots are not only cheap, but a popular snack for almost all children.

White cabbage juice

This cabbage juice is good for our gastric mucosa and is often used for gastritis or heartburn. In worms, he is said to be also effective according to ancient traditions. You can either make the juice yourself or buy it in the trade. For use, a glass must be drunk several times a week in the morning on an empty stomach.

thyme

Especially as a medicinal plant for cough and other respiratory diseases, thyme has long been valued. He is considered an excellent home remedy for bronchitis and even with simple colds shows its strong mucolytic effect. It can be stimulating on our digestive system. Did you know that he also has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-parasite effects? The contained essential oils are very strong, the worms do not like these substances.

For example, if you drink more teas from thyme, rosemary, sage or mint, you can do something preventive of a possible worm infection. The tea can also be used by pregnant women and children over the age of 1.5 years.

Coconut oil or coconut flakes

Coconut oil is a well-known home remedy for worm infestations in cats and dogs. Also to ward off the annoying ticks the intake of coconut oil is very well suited. The coconut oil helps not only our pets but also us humans, if we should have "captured" worms. For a sustainable control of the parasites are taken over two weeks every day several teaspoons of the oil, already in the morning on an empty stomach the first spoon.

It contains lauric acid in the coconut, they do not like the worms at all. Since much inferior oil is also available on the market, attention should be paid to the purity and quality of the coconut oil. Of course, coconut flakes can help in addition to the oil, but they contain the active ingredient only in minor proportions. Therefore, these must be more distorted compared to the oil for the same effect.

All pure coconut products are suitable for the prevention of worm infections, the parasites like neither the contained dodecanoic acid nor lauric acid. (Image: PhotoSG / fotolia.com)

Oil of oregano

Oregano oil strengthens our immune system, acts against fungi in the gastrointestinal tract and supports digestion. The oil can also be used as a home remedy for worms - most easily in the form of fully filled capsules. It can be purchased just as pure in the vial, but should not be consumed pure because of its pungent essential oils. Always dilute in other oil before swallowing. For children under twelve the oil is not suitable.

onions

Also our well-known kitchen onion (medicinal plant of the year 2015) can be helpful. She fights fungi and bacteria and our immune system is generally strengthened. Even with a worm infection it can be effective. When mixed with some minced garlic in coconut oil, it should be given twice a day for one week to control the worms.

rhubarb root

Often the root of rhubarb is mentioned as an old home remedy for worms. It has a strong laxative effect and heals injuries of the mucous membranes. A tea is prepared from the dried roots, which is then drunk twice a day. However, this remedy is not recommended for children, pregnant women and nursing mothers, and it is not recommended for chronic inflammation of the digestive tract.

Colloidal Silver

In addition, colloidal silver is also able to kill the various pathogens. Even with a worm infestation, this can help as an easy-to-take solution. In addition to oral administration of silver, dabbing the rectum with this silver solution is recommended.

homeopathy

With the help of correctly selected homeopathic remedies, a milieu is to be created in the body of the human being in which worms no longer feel well and seek the distance. These include funds such as China, Spigelia, Abrotanum and many more. Homeopathic therapists or therapists can help here, it depends on the type and extent of worm infestation.

Right nutrition

Basically, a low carbohydrate diet is recommended in which one abstains from sweets. The contained sugar is used by mushrooms, which additionally weaken our intestines. This also includes alcohol, which is converted into sugar. To support our gastrointestinal tract we should eat natural probiotics like chichoree or yogurt. Also fermented foods such as kombucha, miso, sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar or kefir are helpful here. In addition, probiotic intestinal germs can be taken. These are available in capsule form or in small ampoules in drugstores and pharmacies.

The typical symptom of the pinworm infection is the annoying and intense itching on the rectum. (Image: kwanchaichaiudom / fotolia.com)

pinworms

The pinworms are small and elongated filiform, as well as white in color. The eggs are swallowed unnoticed with food or impurities on the hands. For example, children scratch their buttocks and then have their fingers quickly on the face or in the mouth. Also, the worm eggs can be on contaminated toys and are passed on in this way to other children. After a short time, the larvae hatch in the duodenum. They then settle in the small intestine, preferably near the cecum.

Adults can grow pinworms up to twelve millimeters long, the females are significantly larger than the males. The main symptom of pinworm is a strong itching in the anal region. What causes this? The females of the worms leave nocturnal the upper intestinal areas and then stay in the near-surface folds in the area of the anus. There, the eggs are deposited from them, which leads to itching again. After only six hours, the next larvae hatch.

Affected children scratch themselves by the unpleasant itching strong and it can cause inflammation. In the worst case, this may extend to the vagina area in girls and itching in the vaginal area and vaginal discharge occur. Often infants affected by the worm have a nocturnal sleep deficit because they can not sleep well due to the itching. During the day they are tired and unfocused.

Especially near the forest, they should regularly deworm their free-roaming pets, otherwise they can become intermediate hosts of the parasites. (Image: alexeg84 / fotolia.com)

The infestation can be easily diagnosed with the help of an adhesive strip. Mount it directly in the anus area and bring it to a doctor in a clean jam jar. In the laboratory, the small eggs are clearly visible under the microscope, the diagnosis can be made quickly. Fortunately, suitable worm remedies (anthelmintics) can be prescribed, with which the worms quickly disappear.

In addition to the worm remedies, some of the home remedies listed above, such as pumpkin seeds or coconut oil, may be given supportive of the chemical worm remedies. In addition, close-fitting underwear is recommended at night to prevent the child from scratching. Cut the fingernails short, often wash hands and brush the nails with a brush. Also, the repeated, best daily change of bed linen is important.

roundworms

Roundworm infection is most prevalent in Africa and Central and South America. Roundworm infections are much more dangerous than pinworm infections, but relatively rare in Germany. In our latitudes, mostly small and school children are affected. Transmission is through the eggs, which are in unwashed lettuce or raw vegetables. By fecal fertilization of the plants get the eggs on the field and also by contaminated drinking water (when traveling abroad), you can be infected.

Here in the picture roundworms are to be seen, which resemble the earthworms in the appearance. They are up to 45 inches long. (Image: sinhyu / fotolia.com)

Up to 200,000 eggs can lay a large roundworm female per day. After only three weeks, the viable larva hatches from the egg. The larvae can penetrate the intestinal wall and penetrate other organs. They spread through the bloodstream. In addition to the liver and lungs, they also affect the bile ducts and can migrate to the larynx. Here they may be swallowed again and get back into the stomach to later sprinkle new eggs in the intestine.

Symptoms often occur only when the growing parasites are already in the lungs. It shows flu-like symptoms with a slight fever and cough, it also comes to fatigue. Sometimes the worms are coughed out, at several centimeters in length, a disgusting sight. In the digestive tract roundworms often cause abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea, but many sufferers have no complaints in the lower abdomen.

Also, allergic reactions such as a vesicular rash are possible. Rarely, the worms migrate into the pancreatic ducts and in the worst case, a large accumulation of worms can even lead to intestinal obstruction. If the suspicion is confirmed in the laboratory examination of a stool sample, then a prescription drug is necessary. Especially papaya cores can support the orthodox medicine here wonderfully.

How to respond to a worm infection and which home remedies can be used supportively, you will also learn in the "healing practice Guide for stomach and intestine". Here you can buy the guide.

tapeworms

The tapeworm is also one of the parasites. In addition to the head, it consists of many limbs and can grow in man over five meters in length. In the course of its development cycle it changes its host, whereby the mainly afflicted host is often used as namesake for the tapeworm species. In addition to the pork tapeworm, there is also a fox tapeworm, a fish tapeworm and many others. We as humans can be for the tapeworm intermediate host (the larvae) or end host (adult tapeworms).

It comes to infection by raw, contaminated meat - or meat, which was cooked too little. The tiny worm segments (fins) or eggs pass through food into the gut of the host and then grow there to larvae. If he is fully grown, he also attacks other organs. An infection by the fox tapeworm often runs symptomless for years, until it comes to pain due to the heavy infestation of the liver.

Fortunately, the fox tapeworm is rarely transmitted to humans, usually through close contact with a pet. Especially cats that often go hunting for mice near the forest are at risk here. If they eat infested mice, they can become an intermediate host to the worms and thereby permanently eliminate worm eggs. The animal lover then inadvertently ingests these eggs after petting his cat. They are so small that they are invisible to the naked eye.

Tapeworms are the most unpleasant representatives of parasitic worms in our latitudes. They also migrate from the abdominal region to other organs of our body. The illustration shows the pork tapeworm with its mouthparts. (Image: crevis / fotolia.com)

It is important to wash your hands after stroking if the animal is a free-fall. Regularly, in fox areas every six months, dogs and cats should be dewormed. It is also possible to inhale the eggs by careless handling of contaminated faeces. This should be removed with an inverted bag. Then pour boiling water over the spot to avoid contamination with the eggs. In recent years, there are more infected foxes in urban areas. Mushrooms collected in the forest must be boiled before consumption, blueberries as well.

The effects of tapeworm infestation can be hazardous to health. The disease is diagnosed with the help of a stool sample. Abdominal pain, loss of appetite, but also cravings are possible complaints. In addition, nausea, constipation, headache and vomiting may be associated with this infection. In the later course, it comes to weight loss and anemia. Unfortunately, these nasty parasites can infect organs, settling there and forming dangerous cysts. A tapeworm disease is essential in the hands of a doctor, or even treatment in the hospital is necessary.

Summary - Get rid of worms

If there is a suspicion of a worm infestation, a doctor must be consulted. From an own hand "doctoring" is absolutely not recommended. As a layman, you can not even determine which type of worm it is. However, the home remedies mentioned above can usefully accompany and support conventional medical therapy. Above all, good care has to be taken with worm control: cutting short fingernails, daily change of underwear and bed linen and very frequent hand washing are now mandatory. The hands should not only be washed before eating, but also after the cloister, after stays outside and after contact with pets. Children should be repeatedly reminded that scratching the butt can quickly lead to a re-infection, as long as the parasites have not been fully combated. (sw, dp, updated on 25.12.2018)
