When to the doctor with a burn?

An open fireplace, candles or the hot pot on the stove: In the home there are numerous ways to burn yourself. Especially children quickly get burned when they try to reach for the hot pan or make the first attempts at detonation. If babies or toddlers are affected and / or the area is large (i.e., larger than the affected person's palm), more severe with or without blistering, seek medical attention as quickly as possible, or even call emergency medical services.

For lighter burns, different home remedies can be used, but in severe cases urgently requires a visit to the doctor or possibly even the consultation of an emergency doctor. (Image: Africa Studio / fotolia.com)

Even if there are signs of a shock such as Facial pale, trembling, cold sweat or agitation occur or the eyes are affected, should not be hesitated and immediately notified the ambulance. In addition, a doctor must be consulted if there are complications such as healing. a brownish liquid in the blisters or the injury has not healed after two weeks.

If there is a relatively harmless, superficial injury, natural home remedies can often help with burns. But here, too, it is important to address any uncertainties or questions such as "May I use these medicinal herbs in my child?" Or "How long should I use this remedy to the maximum?" Always a precaution, to a doctor, naturopath or pharmacist to take health risks.

Important First Aid Measure for Combustion: Cooling

The first and most important measure of a small-surface and superficial (that is, not larger than the affected person's palm) combustion is cooling. The affected area should be cooled immediately after the accident under running, cold or lukewarm water. If burned in the face, it can be cooled with moist cloths, but it is important to remember that the airways remain free. Even if it is close, do not use ice (ice cubes), ice-cold water or Cool-Packs, otherwise there is a risk of hypothermia and tissue damage. Accordingly, the total cooling time should not last longer than ten to fifteen minutes.

If the combustion is more extensive, it must not be cooled due to the risk of hypothermia, instead the affected area should be covered loosely and as free of germs as possible (with a bandage towel, for example) and given immediate medical attention. Also, the opening of blisters should be left to the physician, so as not to take any additional risk of infection. Since scorched or charred clothing quickly sticks to the body, it should also be removed only by medical personnel to prevent further injury and infection. In the event of scalding (eg, boiling water, tea, coffee), soaked clothing should be removed immediately before cooling to prevent the heat from continuing to affect the skin. Likewise, burning clothing must always be extinguished, either with the help of water or by suffocation of the flames.

For minor, superficial injuries, cooling ointments or a branding gel can then be used. However, if the burn is more extensive or deeper, caution should be exercised, as in this case ointment may cause wound infection. Basically should also be avoided home remedies such as oil, butter or flour. Because in the case of a burn, these remedies are by no means effective, but may even aggravate the symptoms and make the assessment and treatment of the wound at the doctor considerably more difficult.

With light burns also Schüssler salts can bring a soothing relief. In question here is especially the salt no. 3 (Ferrum phosphoricum), which is taken in the typical potency D12 to support the defenses in the acute case of injury. Likewise, in many cases, the Schüßler salt No. 8 (sodium chloratum) in the potency D6 has been proven, which can be taken internally in the form of tablets as well as externally applied by ointment.

Bach flower therapy can also be used effectively for minor burns. This was in the 1930s by the English dr. Edward Bach develops and is based on the thesis that every physical illness is based on a mental equilibrium disorder. Bach assumed that the bound energy of flowers has a balancing effect on the psyche of humans and therefore often also physical symptoms can be improved. In the course of his work, the English physician described a total of 38 disharmonic mental states of the human being, assigned these flowers and plant parts and made them into mother tinctures. By dilution, the so-called "flower essences" are finally formed, which are non-toxic and can be combined with any medical therapy.

For an acute emergency such as a burn are especially special "emergency drops", which are also referred to as "Rescue Remedy". This is a very special combination of five different Bach flower remedies, which are by Dr. med. Bach have been put together and are ready mixed in every pharmacy available. Emergency drops can be used in various situations, in addition to a combustion z. Insect bites, bite injuries, panic attacks or shock. Likewise, the remedy may, for example, also provide relief against anxiety and anxiety prior to surgery, a visit to a dentist or an important exam, and after a separation or tragic loss.

The mix consists of Star of Bethlehem (Golden Star of Cancer) for the shock condition, Impatiens (gland-bearing balsam) as an aid to mental stress and inner restlessness and Rock Rose (Common Sunflower) against fear and panic. In addition, Cherry Plum (Cherry Plum) oppose extreme inner tension and Clematis (Common Clematis), which helps in mental absence and the tendency to fainting. The emergency drops are used directly from the vial, are absolutely harmless and have no side effects. It has proven useful in emergency situations to take one to four rescue drops either undiluted or with a glass of water. This can be repeated until a relief of the complaints occurs.

For external use, the emergency ointment ("rescue remedy cream") is often very well suited for a smaller, superficial burn. In this case, the affected area is first cooled for a few minutes with cold water and carefully dabbed dry. Then immediately apply the Bach flower emergency cream. On open wounds, however, no cream or ointment should be given to prevent infection.

On the other hand, when the burning pain and the itching become stronger in the cold and show smaller, lighter blisters, Urtica urens (stinging nettle) can be the drug of choice.

Natural treatment with medicinal plants
