In Schleswig-Holstein, several people wanted to turn a bathroom into a sauna on Saturday night with the help of a charcoal grill. Of course, this went wrong: ten people had to be taken to the hospital with smoke poisoning, among them several children.

„Stupid and incomprehensible action“
In Schleswig-Holstein Heide (Dithmarschen district), the attempt to use a charcoal grill for an impromptu sauna session in their own home went awry. According to a news agency dpa news agency, ten people were hospitalized with smoke inhalation on Saturday night, including six children, because of the severe smoke. As a firefighter spokesman reported on Sunday, the residents had set the grill in the bathroom and set fire to it. He said: „A pretty stupid and incomprehensible action.“ According to the police, "the group wanted to do a sauna in their own home". The officials refer to "statements of the injured".

Serious health consequences
It is still unclear whether alcohol was involved. Lighting a barbecue inside the home can have serious health consequences. In addition to dizziness, lightheadedness and headache, typical symptoms of smoke poisoning include sweating, inner agitation and, in some cases, tachycardia. Since a smoke poisoning often leads to the fact that those affected become unconscious, there is an imminent danger to their lives, especially if there are no other persons present who can help.
