Health risk of Trichinella
Trichinella causes a so-called trichinellosis in humans. According to the Görlitz district, however, this is extremely rare in Germany. Only 63 cases of this notifiable disease were registered on average across Germany in the years 2001 to 2011. The incubation period after ingestion of the Trichinella usually takes between five and 14 days but can also take up to one and a half months. The trichinellosis is characterized by discomfort of the digestive tract, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea. Later, symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches and skin irritation may occur. In severe disease progression threatens at worst an inflammation of the meninges or the heart muscle. (Fp)
