Listeria bacteria can cause listeriosis
Listeria is a bacteria that may cause the dangerous disease listeriosis. This infectious disease, which has been notifiable in Germany since 2001, primarily affects people who have poor physical defense. In addition, pregnant women have an approximately 12-fold increased risk of developing it. The course of the disease is similar to that of influenza. Thus sufferers suffer first from diarrhea and violent abdominal pain and later often with fever, severe headache or even paralysis and dizziness. Since it can take up to two months between infection and illness, the diagnosis of listeriosis is sometimes difficult. Therefore, the symptoms described should be taken seriously. Upon detection, treatment with antibiotics takes place.
Particular caution is advised during pregnancy. But even toddlers and patients with a weak immune system could get serious health problems. It is therefore strongly advised not to consume the products, even if the retailers emphasize that the recall is a precautionary measure. (Sb)
