Recall for Fleckenbühler cheese because of Listeria

Demeter: Recall of Fleckenbühler Schönstädter, Fleckenbühler pepper soft cheese and Fleckenbühler garlic soft cheese
04/10/2015
Several Demeter cheeses from the Fleckenbühler Hofkäserei could be contaminated with Listeria. The manufacturer has therefore recalled the products as a precautionary measure. Customers who have bought the garlic soft cheese, pepper soft cheese or Schönstädter cheese from the farm Fleckenbühl should not consume him. Because Listeria can cause a so-called listeriosis, in which symptoms such as flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal problems occur. In rare cases, the pathogens can even be life-threatening. Especially in pregnant women, infants and people with weakened immune systems severe events can occur.
Failure to prepare the salt bath could be the cause of listeria in the cheese
The farm estate Fleckenbühl from Schönstadt calls again three cheeses for Listeria from the trade, after already bacteria were detected in the soft cheese of the manufacturer in early April. Like the online edition of „Upper Hessian press“ reports are from the cheese dairy „extensive investigations were carried out“ to find the cause of the bacterial load. „As part of these analyzes, a malfunction in the production process was discovered and the cause immediately removed“, the company informs the newspaper. Very likely to be in the renewal of the salt bath „made a handling error in which the contamination was registered“. Since further tests on new samples would have revealed no Listerienbefall, the dairy is optimistic that the source of the error was thus found and eliminated. „We systematically narrowed down the problem and have given more samples for the coming weeks to be beyond any doubt“, the paper quotes a company spokesman.
Listeria in cheese can be life-threatening for people with weakened immune systems
Those affected by the recall are three soft cheeses from the same production cycle as last week's charred carrot soft cheese. It is the „beautiful city dwellers“ with the lot number 060715, the „Garlic soft cheese“ with the batch number 060615 as well as the „Pepper soft cheese“ Lot No 060515. All products concerned have a best before date 9 April 2015. Since this already expired yesterday, most of the approximately 480 affected pieces of cheese may have been consumed.
„The bacteria Listeria monocytogenes can trigger the infectious disease listeriosis. This is usually associated with flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal complaints, but in individual cases could be life-threatening. People with immunodeficiency, the elderly, the sick, small children or pregnant women are particularly at risk“, informs the dairy on its website.
As the newspaper reports, the company had taken the affected products already yesterday from the trade. Consumers who have already bought the cheese should not eat it, but return it to the point of sale for reimbursement of the purchase price. The company is available for questions at the telephone number 06427 9221-118 / 147. (Ag)
