Advice on holidays Which criteria should be met by champagne
On the Christmas holidays and at the turn of the year, many Germans like to treat themselves to something special. Probably no other time in Germany so many champagne bottles are opened. In order to be called "champagne", the sparkling wine must meet some criteria.
Noble sparkling wine for festive occasions
Champagne is certainly not on the table for most people. But on certain occasions, many Germans like to treat themselves to a good droplet. The King of Wines stands on many a festive Christmas table and on New Year's Eve a bottle is opened to say goodbye to the old year and greet the new one. Important to know: Only very specific sparkling wines may call themselves "champagne".
Champagne comes from Champagne
The deciding factor is which region he comes from. "Champagne comes exclusively from the northeastern French Champagne region and has a high price due to the limited production area," said Andrea Danitschek of the Consumer Center Bavaria in a message from the news agency dpa.
According to the information, only very specific grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir may be used. Champagne ripens in the bottle for at least 15 months. For sparkling wine it looks different, it can also ferment in large ripening tanks. Besides, he does not have to have a special origin.
Difference between sparkling wine and Prosecco
Also between sparkling wine and Prosecco is distinguished. "Unlike sparkling wine, there are precise specifications for Prosecco, from which grape variety and from which region the production has to be made", Silke Noll from the Bavarian consumer center explained in an earlier release.
Prosecco was therefore originally the name of a white grape, which grows only in a small part of the Veneto region. In 2010, this grape variety was renamed Glera. Since then, Prosecco must be made from the Glera grape and bottled in the specific region of Italy.
Pay attention to the correct drinking temperature
Whether sparkling wine, sparkling wine or champagne: It is better not to store them too long. Because by long storage carbonic acid disappears and the taste is weaker.
In addition, you should pay attention to the right drinking temperature, if you want to toast with a glass of champagne: ideal are between six and nine degrees.
According to the consumer advice center, the experts are still divided on the choice of glass: "In narrow, tall glasses, the carbon dioxide does not evaporate so quickly, so it pearls longer," said Danitschek. "Some, however, swear by wide champagne shells to better smell the aroma." (Ad)
