Naturopathy Blueberries protect against gingivitis
An extract of wild blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium) was able to prevent gingivitis in one study. Obviously, the bacteria responsible for this disease do not counteract the antibacterial ingredients of the extract. Blueberries stop bleeding gums. Image: Brian Jackson - fotolia
Researchers from Canada had extracted an extract from North America's blueberry Vaccinium angustifolium for their study.
The polyphenol rich extract reduced the growth of the bacteria responsible for gingivitis and reduced their ability to assemble into a biofilm. Unlike single bacteria, it is not easy to fight bacteria in a biofilm. The blueberry extract also blocked a signaling pathway that occurs in gum disease. The study can be found here. (Pm)
