Dairy products do not necessarily go straight to the bin

"Smell me! Try me! "Packaging of dairy products is now calling for ALDI Süd's consumers after the expiration date has passed. In about 400 ALDI branches in southern Germany, a new way is to be taken in order to encourage consumers to become more sustainable. Because dairy products are often much longer lasting than the best before date indicates.

Many consumers throw good food out of uncertainty because the specified best before date is exceeded. To increase the appreciation for food, ALDI SOUTH prints the note "Smell me! Try me! I'm often good for longer! "On various dairy products to encourage customers to have their own health check.

Expired dairy products should not land in the garbage bin right away. Often the foods are longer lasting. If the milk products still smell and taste good, they can still be consumed. (Image: BillionPhotos.com/fotolia.com)

More sustainability through appreciation

ALDI has been testing the imprints on milk packaging since the beginning of the year. The effectiveness of this campaign was recently reviewed by the Group through a consumer survey. "The test has shown that our customers perceive the hint and, above all, adjust their behavior accordingly," reports Dr. med. Julia Adou from ALDI South in a press release on the campaign. According to ALDI, around twelve percent of consumers were encouraged by the indications that the milk was more concerned with external factors such as smell or taste than with the printed best-before date.

Campaign is being extended

After the success of the milk, ALDI now wants to extend the campaign to different cheeses. Here, too, consumers should be asked to rely more on their sense of smell and taste when checking shelf life. (Vb)
