Insecticide fipronil in eggs: maximum values exceeded again

About a year ago, it became known that thousands of eggs that landed in German trade were contaminated with insecticides. Now the insecticide Fipronil has again been detected in imports from the Netherlands. According to authorities, there is no health risk for consumers.

Eggs loaded with fipronil

In the summer of last year it became known that hundreds of thousands of fipronil-contaminated eggs from Dutch production in North Rhine-Westphalia were put on the market. Shortly after it turned out that the contaminated food had landed in other federal states. The discounter Aldi had then taken all the eggs from the supermarkets. Other traders had responded: a total of several million eggs had been recalled. Now, the insecticide was again detected in imports from the Netherlands.

Eggs from a organic laying hen farm

The Reuters news agency said that the permitted fipronil threshold for eggs from a organic laying hen farm in the Netherlands had been exceeded. The agency relies on a communication from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Agriculture.

According to the tests in Vechta fipronil concentrations up to 0.019 milligrams per kilogram were found.

The maximum is believed to be 0.005 milligrams. According to the ministry in Hanover, there is no health risk.

According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), "a fipronil concentration of 0.72 mg / kg (sum of fipronil and the sulfone metabolite MB46136, calculated as fipronil) in chicken eggs can be considered as the maximum concentration for which no acute health effects were found for any of the investigated consumer groups Risk exists ".

The same companies involved

According to the agency report, the same companies that were involved in the Fipronil scandal in 2017 seem to be involved again.

According to the report from Hanover: "The findings are in line with current Dutch press reports, which report on increased fipronil residues in eggs of companies that were closed at the time."

It is said that the authorities of Lower Saxony have ordered the eggs from the organic farm to be withdrawn from the market. The Dutch colleagues were also informed. Further results of the current investigation can not be expected before the beginning of next week.

Fipronil is a broad-spectrum insecticide used against, among other things, fleas, lice, ticks, cockroaches and mites. The use in animals that deliver food is not allowed. (Ad)
