Causes of a rotten stomach

The complaints can be triggered by foods and stimulants such as sweets, ice cream, sugary soda drinks (cola), greasy foods (French fries) but also fruit that are eaten out of control or confused. Especially small children, who in turn put all tangible objects in their mouth, eat once inedible things.

Other possible causes include food poisoning or food infection. The former is caused by eating foods that contain toxins. These may occur naturally (eg in fly agaric or green tuberous agaric) or as contaminants from outside (for example as a residue during processing) enter the food. However, food poisoning is usually caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium botulinum.

Fish poisoning is a special form of food poisoning that can occur through the ingestion of toxins from shells, fish and other marine creatures.

The cause of the spoiled stomach may be e.g. be an infection with Salmonella. These usually come via food such. raw eggs or egg products (mayonnaise, salads, raw cake dough etc.) in the digestive tract of humans. (Image: aga7ta / fotolia.com)

In contrast, a food infection is caused by living pathogens that enter the gastrointestinal tract via the food. Here they multiply and thereby trigger the complaints, whereby usually even a small number of infectious microorganisms is sufficient. In most cases, Salmonella, Campylobacter, E.coli bacteria and Listeria are responsible for foodborne infections.
