Historical background - beginning of homeopathy
The doctor and pharmacist Samuel Hahnemann (1755 - 1843) is the founder of homeopathy. Through his self-experiment he set the foundation for this naturopathic healing method. Since he was chemist as well as doctor and pharmacist, he repeatedly carried out experiments. He ate a piece of cinchona bark, whereupon he developed malaria-like symptoms. This was the starting signal for homeopathy. However, several years passed, in which he made further self-experiments and also carried out in the family and friends various tests. Only six years later, in 1796, his thoughts on homeopathy were published. That was the birth of this fascinating form of therapy.

The law of similarity "similar things are healed by like" is the basis of homeopathy, the basis for the use of this medicine.
This law states that only the remedy whose remedy picture resembles the symptoms of the disease that man has developed can cure. In order to know about the individual drug pictures and the effect of the individual plants, homeopathic provings were and are necessary in healthy people. Healthy subjects take the resources to be tested. The occurring symptoms are recorded, the people watching closely. The knowledge gained is written down in directories, the so-called pharmacology or materia medicae. In this case, the effect of the substance is not determined, but the symptoms, moods, dreams and feelings associated with the intake are recorded.
Example: The kitchen onion - Alium cepa
The similarity principle can be illustrated quite well with the help of the kitchen onion. When cutting an onion tears and burning eyes, nose runs, the secretion is very watery. In homeopathy Alium cepa (kitchen onion) is used when describing exactly these symptoms: Runny nose, burning eyes and abundant watery secretions. This example is very simple. However, a therapist who deals exclusively with homeopathy, must undergo a long training in order to get to know the homeopathic remedies properly and then to be able to apply them in practice.
The potentiation - pillar of homeopathy
Hahnemann carried out many experiments and increasingly reduced the dosage of the individual substances in order to reduce the resulting symptoms. He found that smaller doses worked even better. He refined his experiments and developed the principle of potentiation. This was also called the rule of the smallest possible dose, which states that the smaller the dose of an agent, the greater its effect. His method was then to dilute and shake the substances more and more until only molecular amounts are available. The Verschüttelung, or potentiation, today takes place according to established rules.
Capital letters such as C, D and LM (or Q) indicate the ratio in which the substance was diluted. C stands for 1: 100, D means 1:10, LM means 1: 50,000. The number following the letter, for example D6, tells us how many times the drug has been diluted and shaken, in our example six times in the ratio 1:10.
Preparation / potentiation
For the preparation of homeopathic remedies either triturations or mother tinctures are used as a basis. From solid and insoluble starting substances, a so-called trituration (triturated with milk sugar) is first produced, and from soluble substances a so-called mother tincture.
The mother tincture is then usually mixed together with an alcohol-water mixture in the prescribed mixing ratio - such as at D in the ratio 1:10. This means that a part of the starting substance with nine parts of the carrier substance is placed together in a small bottle and shaken, from which then D1 is formed. The necessary shaking strokes are carried out either on the palm of your hand or on a firm surface. In the potency D6, a part of the prepared D1 is now mixed again with nine parts of carrier substance and shaken again. This process is repeated until the desired exponentiation is achieved. Due to the potentiation in homeopathy, the proportion of matter decreases more and more, but the healing effect more and more. Substances that are not soluble in alcohol are triturated with lactose until they are soluble and then potentiated accordingly.
The production of homeopathic remedies is regulated in the German Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia. These remedies are available as drops, triturates, tablets, ampoules, nasal sprays, eye drops or globules.
dosage
In homeopathy, the dosage is based on different criteria: Is the disease acute or chronic? Are the symptoms physical or emotional? Are children or adults affected? For example, powers up to the C12 / D12 are more physical, whereas up to the C30 / D30 the physical and mental areas are addressed. Powers from C30 / D30 are called high potencies and work mainly on the mental and spiritual level, and these are also used in emergencies.
The potency administered and how often it is given often depends on the treating therapist. Some prescribe only D-potencies, others have the affinity for C-agents. Experiences come into play here and make themselves felt in the selection. Homeopathy is a very special healing method, which requires a lot of empathy and knowledge. Therefore, the remedies are often used in different amounts and potencies, but the effect is usually the same.
For purely physical symptoms such as sore throat, runny nose or cough, the lower-potentized homeopathic remedies are used. In chronic processes, however, the choice tends to be more potent.
The right dosage is very important. Picture: Alexander Raths / fotoliaIn homeopathy, the dosage is referred to as a "gift". These are five drops, five globules or an adult tablet. Babies up to one year receive one third, children up to six years half and up to the age of twelve three quarters of the adult dose. The more acute the symptoms are, the more frequently the remedy is given, which can be hourly or even more frequent in the initial phase.
In emergency situations is usually treated with high potencies, from C30 / D30. Emergencies include accidents, sudden high-grade inflammation, massive anxiety, mental and physical trauma. For example, Aconitum is prescribed for a sudden onset of anxiety or a massive fever, Nux vomica for a dream of Arnica or poisoning.
Homeopathic remedies are absorbed by the mucous membrane. This means that a minimum distance to the food of half an hour should always be respected. The remedies are sucked or diluted in water to keep something in the mouth and then swallowed. For preparation in water only plastic or wooden spoons should be used.
From the anamnesis to the homeopathic remedy
To find the right, suitable homeopathic remedy, a detailed history is important. In the process, the patient is systematically questioned - in the case of children, the parents. The symptoms are analyzed exactly: where is the pain, what is his character, when does he occur, how long does he last and further questions need to be answered. In case of cold, for example, it would be important if the secretion is thin, slimy, transparent or even yellowish. Is the cold sticking or is your nose constantly running? Do you have additional headaches, are they always there or only when they move? On the basis of the survey then the appropriate agent is selected and set the dosage. In addition, patients are informed that an initial aggravation may occur when taking a homeopathic remedy and what should be done in this case.
The constitutional remedy
Users of classical homeopathy try to find a so-called constitutional remedy for each patient. A means that corresponds to his life, his person and his image of man. The constitutional remedy includes individual characteristics, the appearance, the appearance, the character, certain peculiarities and complaints. The therapist tries to find this out with the help of a detailed anamnesis, which can extend over several appointments, suitable for the client. With the constitutional remedy complaints can be alleviated, weak points can be compensated, but also fears, anger and anger can be reduced. In order to find the right remedy, the practitioner depends on the one hand on the exact narration of the patient, on the other hand, but also on his own observation. Anamnesis, also called case recording, requires a quiet and familiar environment. The practitioner logs everything exactly and then evaluates this with the help of so-called repertories, homeopathic reference works. The found funds should then ideally fit humans, like a key to the castle.
aggravation
An initial aggravation in the context of a homeopathic treatment may or may not be. This will increase the acute symptoms. However, this only lasts for a short time and the symptoms usually become less and less. If this is not the case, the doctor or alternative practitioner should be consulted. If symptoms occur that did not exist before, the medication should be discontinued. Many patients are afraid of the first aggravation. This is not necessary. The first reaction is a positive reaction of the body, as it now begins to heal itself.
The healing process in homeopathy
If homeopathy is used in the treatment of an illness, so-called herring rule is important for the healing process. This was set up by the American homeopath Constantin Hering. It states that homeopathic treatment causes the symptoms to move first from the inside out. For example, if a patient suffering from asthma experiences a skin rash during therapy, this is unpleasant but a sure sign to the experienced therapist that the treatment is a step in the right direction.
complex Homeopathy
Compounds used in complex homeopathy contain several homeopathic remedies with different potentiation. These remedies are usually put together in such a way that the different substances support each other in their effect.
Example: drug picture Pulsatilla (Pasque Flower)
To describe the complete drug picture of Pulsatilla would go beyond the scope here. In the following lines, however, you will gain insight into the nature of the cupcakes, for which complaints it is appropriate, which mind and which characters are treated with it.
Above all, Pulsatilla is a remedy for gentle, mild and compliant women who are easily close to tears. Pulsatilla loves fresh air and always feels better there. People who need this remedy are often timid and undecided, they are slightly discouraged and their moods are like April - sun and rain are constantly changing. The sensibilities of Pulsatilla include a dry mouth without thirst, aversion to fatty and / or warm food and drinks. Pulsatilla suffers from ailments, such as flatulence, dry cough, wandering body aches and more. (Sw)
