causes

Mostly, the cause of hypertension is unclear. This is also called essential hypertension. Other causes include kidney, endocrine, vascular, type II diabetes, or certain medications such as glucocorticoids, psychotropic drugs, thyroid hormones, and the anti-baby pill. Also, a predisposition to high blood pressure can be genetically determined.

Other causes include obesity, physical inactivity, high cholesterol, high salt intake, daily alcohol intake, negative stress, smoking and potassium deficiency. In any case, hypertension must be clarified by a doctor. If diseases are the underlying, they should be treated first.

symptoms

Many patients do not notice their existing hypertension for a long time. This is then a so-called incidental finding, for example, at the annual check-up. Others complain of headaches, tinnitus, dizziness, heart palpitations and sweats. If there is an underlying disease, there are often more symptoms.

The WHO (World Health Organization) divides the hypertension as follows:
An optimal blood pressure prevails at values of systolic around 120 mmHg and diastolic around 80 mmHg. At normal blood pressure, systole is between 120 and 129 and diastole is between 80 and 84 mmHg. High-normal blood pressure means systolic values between 130 to 139 mmHg and diastolic values between 85 and 89 mmHg.

Thereafter begins the so-called mild hypertension, also called stage I: systole 140 to 159 mmHg and diastole 90 to 99 mmHg. At moderate hypertension (stage 2), systole reaches 160-179 mmHg and diastole 100-109 mmHg. Systolic values above 180 mmHg and diastolic values greater than 110 mmHg are referred to as severe hypertension (Level 3).
