Visually, the Indian basil is more reminiscent of sage than its Mediterranean counterparts. The leaves of the up to one meter high Tulsikrautes are significantly deeper notched than those of ordinary basil and are like the sage rather elongated and finely hairy. The hairy stems also show a slight purple color, which continues in the leaf veins and sometimes even in the leaves themselves.

The Indian basil received its name unmistakably from its Indian homeland. However, India is not the only Asian country in which Ocimum tenuiflorum is native. The natural range extends from southwest or southeast Asian countries such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, Myanmar and China to the north of Australia. However, especially in India, the Tulsicraut has a very exceptional position within folk medicine and folk religion. Because the herb is considered here as a protective plant Vishnus. The nickname "Holy Basil" is thus explained by itself.

By the way: The fact that the Tulsicraut is also known as Holy Basil, even led to the alternative botanical term Ocimum sanctum. However, this is rarely needed.

According to Ayurvedic belief, Tulsi is one of those rare herbs that can bring about a harmonious balance of the three doshas.

The three doshas in Ayurveda

Doshas, ​​these are the three aspects that determine the individual constitution, the so-called prakriti of a human being from birth in the teachings of Ayurveda.

Vata (air / wind)

This dosha is responsible for physical and mental movements of the body. Like a flag blowing in the wind, touching, if at all, only fleetingly the ground of the facts, would best describe the character of persons with strong vata. They are according to Ayurvedic view flexible to unsteady, delicately built with an elongated face and have an irregular digestion or an irregular feeling of hunger. Kapha (water and earth)

This dosha symbolizes the solid components of the body, ie fingernails, bones and teeth. Ayurveda is associated with stability as well as constant and caring attention. All in all, a calm personality that you can always rely on. Challenges are strategically addressed and, albeit somewhat more slowly than usual, handled with care. However, the urge to move of the Kapha type is not particularly pronounced according to his steady to stationary character. For this reason, he tends to overweight in terms of physique and is found in passive melancholy and idleness again. His digestion is a bit sluggish, which favors digestive problems. This imbalance is caused by a number of harmful everyday, social and environmental factors, such as:

The Tulsicraut in Ayurveda

Considering the importance of a healthy prakriti for personal health, medicinal plants like tulsi that restore the balance of the doshas are of course a blessing in ayurveda. And indeed, the Holy Basil are said to have healing effects that specifically target health problems associated with the doshas, ​​such as forgetfulness, indigestion or stress symptoms. In addition, the Tulsicraut has a number of other beneficial properties that are completely independent of the Ayurvedic Dosha philosophy. Overall, the herb is indicated in the following complaints:

  • respiratory symptoms,
    for example, asthma, cold, flu, sore throat, cough or pharyngitis.
  • eye diseases
    for example, at night blindness or retinopathy.
  • Gastrointestinal complaints
    for example, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, convulsions, stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal influenza.

Ingredients and effect

A holistic effect of medicinal herbs is always in the foreground in the Ayurvedic treatment of diseases, because health complaints arise here due to an imbalance in the energy flows. Consequently, such disturbances can only be remedied if a trouble-free sequence in the body system is ensured. The ingredients of Tulsicraut provide a good basis in this context, because they have a targeted effect on crucial points in the metabolism and cardiovascular system. Responsible for the healing effect of the herb are:

  • antioxidants,
  • essential oils,
  • flavonoids,
  • saponins
  • and ursolic acid.

antioxidants

Antioxidants are natural substances that protect the body from oxidative stress. This arises when the metabolism is overwhelmed with the degradation of harmful substances, so-called free radicals. These include, for example, nitrogen monoxide, chlorine radicals and other pollutants, such as those that enter our bodies through chemically pretreated foods, car or industrial emissions. These substances trigger more oxidation processes in the body, which leads to increased release of reactive oxygen compounds (ROS). This in turn impairs the detoxification function of body cells, which in turn store more and more pollutants than to neutralize. It is believed that oxidative stress is crucial in the development of diseases such as

  • Alzheimer,
  • arteriosclerosis,
  • high blood pressure
  • and coronary heart disease

is involved. In addition, free radicals accelerate the aging process of cells and thus increase wrinkles and organ dysfunction. Antioxidants can actively help prevent free radicals from oxidizing and cause their release from the body. That's how they work

The antioxidants that are specifically included in the Tulsicut also have some special skills. It is about anthocyanins, a special group of plant pigments that have red to blue coloring properties and normally give color to plants such as the blue cornflower or berry fruits such as the blackberry, blueberry or aronia. In addition, anthocyanins are also for their

Effect known. Ocimum tenuiflorum is one of the few medicinal herbs that contains not only berries and flowers but also considerable amounts of anthocyanins, which explains some of the areas of systemic disease.

Interesting: There are studies that indicate that anthocyanins also have a cancer-inhibiting effect. Unfortunately, the current state of studies is not enough to actually recommend these antioxidants for cancer treatment. However, a preventive, cell protective function is quite conceivable, which is why the regular consumption of anthocyanic fruits and herbs is highly recommended.

Essential oils

The most important ingredients in Tulsic herb, however, are completely different plant-derived substances, despite the remarkable healing properties of anthocyanins. They are the main constituents of the essential oil in Indian basil and are effective against a whole range of diseases, including:

  • asthma,
  • colds,
  • gout,
  • fungal infections,
  • rheumatism,
  • worm infestation
  • as well as tooth and gingivitis,

At the same time, the essential ingredients of the Tulsikraut, at least partially, can also be counted among the antioxidants. This is especially true for eugenol, because of its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, especially in dentistry is gladly used. Especially infectious tooth and gum diseases such as gingivitis, periodontitis or pulpitis therefore respond very well to mouthwashes with Tulsicraut.

Even more intensive are the disinfecting, as well as the anti - inflammatory properties of the carvacrol the plant. It not only relieves inflammatory infections caused by bacteria or fungi, but also works effectively against parasites and insects. Furthermore, carvacrol is considered an important drug against rheumatic and metabolic diseases, which are based on impaired renal function.

The linalool in Indian basil also covers a very beneficial area for the respiratory tract. It works namely expectorant and thus promotes the expectoration in respiratory diseases. Other noteworthy essential additives in the plant are:

Important: The actual content of essential ingredients can vary greatly depending on the particular Tulsisorte!

polyphenols

Plant dyes such as anthocyanins, and also some essential oils, which help to shape the color and / or taste of Tulsikraute, are included in the superordinate group of flavonoids. Not only does this have in common that they have a particularly high antioxidant potential. Also other healing effects, such as one

  • antimicrobial,
  • antiviral,
  • anticarcinogenic,
  • anti-inflammatory
  • as well as regulating nervous and cardiovascular system

Effect is characteristic of most flavonoids. In the medical field, they are used mainly for the production of heart medicines, venous agents and means for enhancing the immune system. In the flavonoids Orientin and Vicenin Radiation-protective properties have also been identified in Tulsicut which may be relevant for radiotherapy for cancer, as well as for UV protection.

Together with the vegetable tannins in Tulsikraut, the so-called tannins, The dyes and flavors of the plant can be counted among the parent group of polyphenols. The ingredients of Indian basil are therefore very closely related, which is not unusual in medicinal herbs, but also not the rule. Among other things, this material relationship has a positive effect on the well intermeshing mechanisms of action of aroma and tannins. The latter especially strengthen the anti-inflammatory and germicidal effect of Tulsikrautes, which explains its good effect in inflammatory and infectious diseases.

When it comes to the healing properties of the Tulsic herb in the digestive tract, the saponins of the plant also play an important role. They are known to improve the absorption of active ingredients and nutrients in the intestine by increasing the blood flow to the intestinal walls and increasing their permeability. In addition, the plant substances have a targeted effect against inflammation in the area of ​​the intestinal wall and stimulate the secretion of digestive enzymes by activating appropriate hormones. In addition, the fact that ursolic acid has a cancer-inhibiting potential in various studies is of particular importance medically. Together with other anti-carcinogenic ingredients of Indian basil such as the anthocyanins, an application of Ocimum tenuiflorum in the treatment of cancer does not seem completely outlandish.

Tulsicraut against cancer and radiation damage:
Many components of the Ocimum tenuiflorum have an anticancer and cellular and radiation protection effect. The herb has therefore been discussed for some time as a herbal source of anti-cancer drugs.

Application and dosage

The Tulsicraut is used according to Ayurvedic model mostly as a tea or tincture. In addition, in its Asian homeland, the herb is a traditional culinary spice, which is used together with other oriental herbs such as ginger or cumin to refine dishes. Here, the spicy flavor of the herb gives many traditional dishes their classic touch. In particular, recipes from the Thai cuisine often do not come without the characteristic aroma of Indian basil.

Tea and decoction of Tulsicraut

For internal use of Tulsi tea infusion is best suited. Shown is the brew among others at:

In addition, a decoction of the plant has a strong invigorating and revitalizing effect, which is why it is an interesting alternative to stimulants such as coffee, black tea or energy drinks. For the preparation of the tea are usually used three specific varieties of Tulsikrautes:

  • Rama Tulsi,
  • Krishna Tulsi
  • and Vana Tulsi

Tulsistee Preparation:

To make Tulsitee, simply take two teaspoons of dried Tulsi cabbage leaves, pour them into a cup and pour over 200 milliliters of hot water. The brewing time is about ten minutes, after which the herbs can be strained and the tea can be drunk in small sips. One to two cups per day then help, for example, excellently against a sore or inflamed neck or against gastrointestinal complaints.

Makeover with Tulsi

A special application of Tulsitee is the so-called Rasayana. Behind this is a special ayurvedic makeover, during which two cups of Tulsitee are drunk daily for a period of three days. The preparation of the tea differs slightly from the conventional procedure.

Take five to six dried tulsi leaves to make the spa tea and put them in a cup of water for about three hours. Then simmer the herbal water in a pot for five to seven minutes. After filtering off the leaves, the rejuvenation tea is drunk hot.

Tulsi decoction for Ayurvedic flu treatment

Also for the treatment of flu and colds Ayurveda knows a special preparation of Tulsicraut. Take 40 leaves of the plant (fresh or dried) and bring them to a boil in half a liter of water. After about half of the water has evaporated, filter the leaves and add a pinch of salt to the decoction. The decoction can then be drunk three times a day until the respiratory disease clears.

Tulsitinktur

A tincture of Ocimum tenuiflorum is recommended especially for external complaints, such as problematic skin, dermal cell damage or skin diseases such as warts. Regularly dabbed on the affected skin, the cell-regenerating and cell-protecting ingredients of the Tulsikrautes can develop so directly on the spot.

In some cases, such as severe stress or prolonged fatigue, tulsitic tincture can also be used internally as a tonic. Here, however, it comes down to a very moderate use, because tinctures contain highly concentrated amounts of plant-own ingredients, which can easily cause side effects in an overdose. Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor or alternative practitioner, please comply with a dosage of a maximum of three to five drops daily.

Tulsi in the kitchen

As a traditional culinary herb, Tulsi is best known in Indian, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine. Like ordinary basil in the Mediterranean, the Indian basil is used here as a spice for typical recipes, including

  • curries,
  • fish,
  • poultry dishes,
  • vegetable dishes,
  • noodle dishes,
  • rice dishes
  • and stews.

If you would like to experiment here, we recommend a combination of the Tulsikraut with other traditional spices from the Far East, for example to create a true Asian taste experience

  • and coriander.

The sweet, spicy, slightly aniseed and peppery aroma of Tulsi harmonizes best with them.

Important:
As with ordinary basil, the aroma and healing properties of Indian basil volatilize very quickly under prolonged exposure to heat. The cabbage is therefore added to the dish at the end of the cooking process and should not stay in the saucepan or wok for more than five minutes.

Our recipe tip: Pad Grapao

Pad Grapao is a Thai dish that is traditionally made with Tulsikraut. Served with rice or a fried egg, it is an integral part of the local folk cuisine and therefore our tip for those who want to approach the cooking with Indian basil.

Ingredients (for two persons):

  • a bunch of Tulsikraut,
  • two chilies,
  • two eggs,
  • two cups of jasmine rice,
  • a clove of garlic,
  • two shallots,
  • 400 g of minced pork,
  • a tablespoon of oyster sauce,
  • two tablespoons fish sauce,
  • two tablespoons of light soy sauce,
  • a tablespoon of dark, sweet soy sauce (Kecap Manis),
  • a little oil (best soybean oil),
  • Wok,
  • Mortar and pestle.

Step 1: Peel and chop the garlic clove and the two shallots. The chili peppers are also washed, gutted and finely chopped. Then put garlic, shallots and chili in a mortar and grind them into a spicy paste. Alternatively, a blender or blender can be used.

2nd step: Clean the tulsic herb under some running water and then shake it dry. It is important not to turn up the jet of water too much so that the leaves do not get muddy. Then pluck the basil leaves from the stems.

3rd step: For the jasmine rice, two cups of water per cup are heated and the rice is then cooked in it. If you have a rice cooker at home, you can also use it.

4th step: While the rice is cooking, the Grapao pad is being prepared. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a wok and then add the spice paste. Boil it over medium heat with occasional stirring until an aromatic spice-oil mixture is obtained. Then the minced meat is sautéed and chopped during cooking with a wooden spoon.

5th step: Once the meat is cooked, add the oyster, fish and soy sauces. The whole thing is then mixed well together and allowed to simmer on the stove for a while. Meanwhile, the fried eggs are fried in a separate pan.

6th step: The Tulsi leaves are added to the minced meat at the very end. Heat the whole thing well again, but make sure that the leaves do not turn black.

7th step: Arrange rice and fried eggs on a large, flat plate and then add the minced meat. Now Pad Grapao is ready to serve!

It is recommended that you do not use the tulsic herb for more than six weeks at a time to avoid any unforeseen side effects.
