The human stomach sits slightly to the left of the middle of the body in the upper part of the abdomen. The exact shape and size varies from person to person and also depends on the current filling ratio. On average, the digestive system is about 20 to 30 centimeters long and has a capacity of about 1.5 liters.

The stomach wall consists of strong muscle layers, which allow a constant mixing of the stomach porridge and a further transport of the porridge into the small intestine. The inner wall of the stomach is covered with a thick mucous membrane containing numerous glands. The gastric system of the stomach produces hydrochloric acid and the enzyme pepsin. This mixture forms the gastric juice, which has a pH between two and three. The mucus layer in the stomach prevents the organ from digesting itself.

The main tasks of the stomach include the storage of food, the killing of pathogens and the portion-wise transfer of the food pulp to the intestine. In addition, the enzyme pepsin takes over some of the digestion by breaking down proteins in the stomach. Without the stomach, we would not be able to absorb and gradually process larger amounts of food. Easily digestible food such as fruit remains in the stomach for about one to two hours.
