Inflammation of the vertebral bodies a rare, usually very painful disease

causes

Spondylitis can be of an infectious nature, that is caused by pathogens. This is said to be the most common cause, with bacteria (especially streptococci) coming first. In most cases the focus in the organism is elsewhere and the pathogens migrate into the spinal region (caused endogenously). It can also come in the context of open fractures and operations for entry of pathogens.

complaints

Mainly back pain and low back pain occur. If the inflammation spreads to adjacent tissues and nerves, flank pain, back stiffness, sciatic pain, neck tension, sensory disturbances, and weakness in movement may also occur. Since it is an inflammation, fever and general exhaustion may also be symptomatic. If the inflammation extends to the intervertebral discs, this is called spondylodiscitis.

special cases

In the context of tuberculosis or brucellosis, the pathogens can also enter the vertebrae and trigger spondylitis tuberculosa or brucellosa. Ankylosing spondylitis also includes ankylosing spondylitis or Bechterew's disease.

Spondylitis is an emergency

Spondylitis should always be taken very seriously and medical treatment promptly initiated as inflammation may affect adjacent regions, e.g. on the organs, spillover and life-threatening complications. (Thorsten Fischer, Naturopath Osteopathy)
