Cough should not be suppressed

Cough should not be suppressed. But at night or during work and school, the cough is sometimes extremely stressful and disturbing - especially if the coughing attacks do not want to end. Many then resort to a so-called cough suppressant. However, cough syrups containing codeine should be discouraged. Codeine is derived from the opium poppy and belongs to the group of opiates. This substance can cause severe side effects, such as a decreased respiratory rate.

Different teas

A coughing, but also expectorant tea blend is the following: marshmallow root 10 g, Icelandic moss 20 g, licorice root 20 g. A heaping teaspoon of the mixture is infused with a quarter liter of boiling water and is drawn for about seven to eight minutes. If necessary, three cups of it are drunk daily.

If the onset of coughing is very acute, the following tea mixture is a good home remedy for cough suppressants: mullein flowers, coltsfoot leaves, marshmallow root and aniseed fruits (these can be lightly toasted) are mixed in equal parts. For a cup of tea, a teaspoon of the mixture is brewed with about 250 milliliters of boiling water. The whole thing should draw about 15 minutes and can be refined after straining with a teaspoon of honey.

Especially children benefit from another tea mixture, which of course can be drunk by adults as well. Mallow flowers and cowslip root mixed in equal parts, a heaping teaspoon of it with a quarter of boiling water poured over and after 10 minutes strained. Three cups a day relieve the coughing and loosen the mucus.

The following mixture also serves as a cough suppressant and reduces the onset of cough: 20 g licorice root, 20 g cowslip root, 15 g aniseed fruits, 5 g mullein bushes and 5 g mallow flowers. One teaspoon of the mixture is brewed with one-quarter liter of boiling water and can be strained after ten minutes. Three to four cups a day, drunk in small sips, breastfeeding and stimulating expectoration.

Wraps and pads

A home remedy that also acts as a cough suppressant is the well-known Quarkwickel. Quark not only pulls the inflammation out of the body, but soothes the bronchial tubes and quenches the coughing stimulus. Such a quark wrap can stay on the skin all night long. For the wrap, only slightly lean quark, a tea towel, a cotton cloth and a wool scarf are needed. Quark is placed lengthwise on the center of the dishcloth and the two free sides are beaten over it. So that the wrap is not so cold, it can rest for a while at room temperature before it is placed on the chest. On top comes the cotton cloth and finally the wool scarf.

Breastfeeding coughing also affects an oil compress. For this purpose, lavender essential oil and / or thyme oil are blended together with some carrier oil (sunflower, almond, or sesame oil), 20 drops of essential oil together with 20 ml of carrier oil. So a small cotton cloth is soaked, surrounded by two sheets of sandwich paper warmed between two hot water bottles and then placed on the skin. In addition, a cotton or linen towel also warmed up. The whole thing is fixed with an undershirt or a T-shirt. Then there is a wool scarf. Essential oils, even if they are high quality, can trigger an allergic reaction. In case of such, treatment should be discontinued immediately. Otherwise, the oil wrap may stay on the skin for one to two hours. The application is made once a day and after five days a day break is taken.

An easy-to-use home remedy to quench the cough is the pad with damp-hot towels. For this purpose, a cloth that is folded several times about 20 x 20 cm in size, dipped in hot water, wrung out and placed according to tolerability on the chest or between the shoulder blades. The edition can be repeated several times.

What also does well and relieves the irritation is a wrap with warmed olive oil. About 200 ml of olive oil are warmed and so a cotton cloth is soaked, the cloth then placed on the chest or back and fixed with another cloth and finally with a woolen cloth. So that the heat does not go away so quickly, a hot water bottle or a warmed spelled cushion can be additionally applied. Those affected should wrap themselves in a bathrobe or blanket. The wrap is renewed as soon as it loses its warmth.

Onions are good helper for respiratory diseases, both internally and externally. A homemade onion wrap takes the inflammation and also serves well as a cough suppressant. One to two onions are minced, wrapped in a cloth, warmed, placed on the chest and covered with a cotton cloth and a woolen cloth.

If you do not like the onion wrap on the chest, you can also make a smaller wrap and attach it to the sole of the foot, especially in the area between the toes and the arch of the foot, with a sock. This may sound unusual, but there are so-called reflex zones on the feet, on which the onion can have a positive effect on the bronchial area in "detours".

Homemade cough syrup

Homemade cough syrup is a popular home remedy to have an effective remedy for coughing attacks quickly and easily at home. The following ingredients are needed: 50 g of onions, 50 g of candy, half a teaspoon of thyme herb and half a teaspoon of dried sage. The onions are cut into small pieces and boiled together with 75 ml of water, the candy, the thyme and the sage. Once the sugar has completely dissolved, the whole thing is strained through a sieve. The collected cough syrup will last for about a week in the refrigerator. Of these, three to four teaspoons should be taken a day. Gladly, the juice can be dissolved in a little hot fennel tea and then swallowed. This is especially recommended if the coughing fits do not stop.

Garlic syrup does not sound inviting. However, this homemade syrup is a great alternative to the well-known onion syrup and no less effective. Five cloves of garlic are cut into small pieces - plus five tablespoons of sugar or three tablespoons of honey. The whole thing is brought to a boil together with one-eighth liter of water and then has to draw for about five minutes. The sown juice is ready for use. Immediately filled in a clean container and tightly closed, the syrup keeps a maximum of one week in the refrigerator. The recommended intake is: three to four teaspoons a day. Beware - if you can not stand garlic, you should stay away from this recipe.

Essential oils in the aroma lamp

What can also be helpful as a cough suppressant is the evaporation of essential oils in an aroma lamp. Suitable for this are pure, high-quality oils of thyme, lavender and eucalyptus. For a room with a size of 20 square meters 5 to 6 drops are sufficient.

Inhale

Inhaling is a simple and easy to use home remedy. It is best to inhale with sea salt or Himalayan salt. If you do not like this, take a handful of chamomile flowers. The salt (nine grams per liter of water) or the chamomile flowers are mixed with boiling water in a bowl. Inhaled with a cloth over the head and the vessel, inhaled with the mouth and exhaled through the nose. If you have time, you should definitely inhale in the morning and in the evening. Just before going to sleep, the respiratory tract calms down and this allows a "cough-free" sleep.

Hot milk with honey

Even our grandmothers provided us with a honey milk for coughing. Hot milk with honey helps with dry cough and annoying coughing. In the evening, drunk before sleeping, this ensures in addition to a good night's sleep. Milk is rich in tryptophan. This in turn is important for the production of sleep promoting melatonin. But beware: Milk with honey may only be used with a dry cough. If the cough is already productive, ie with expectoration (mucus), this home remedy would only cause more mucus.
