"Champidor": mushroom producers launch vitamin D mushroom

German researchers reported last year on vitamin D enriched mushrooms, which are already sold in the UK and Ireland. Now, Swiss mushroom producers have also launched mushrooms that are rich in vitamin D..

Deficient vitamin D supply in Germany

Last year, a study was published, which showed that the vitamin D supply in Germany is deficient. The investigation was for adults. Vitamin D deficiency is also common in children and adolescents. According to the Foundation for Child Health, the majority of girls and boys have "more or less depressed values". If there is actually a vitamin D deficiency, the intake of dietary supplements - after medical examination - in many cases advised. Mushrooms, which have now been launched in Switzerland, may also help.

In Switzerland mushrooms were marketed that are rich in vitamin D. Three of the "Champidor" mushrooms are supposed to meet the daily requirement of vitamin D. (Image: champidor.ch)

Three mushrooms cover the daily needs

As reported by the Swiss Agricultural Information Service (LID), the Association of Swiss Mushroom Producers (VSP) launches mushroom mushrooms rich in vitamin D under the name "Champidor".

Already three of these mushrooms cover the daily requirement for vitamin D of a healthy adult between the ages of 20 and 60 years.

"Champidor is a contribution of the Association of Swiss Mushroom Producers to overcome the lack of vitamin D deficiency", says Fritz Burkhalter, Secretary of the Association of Swiss Mushroom Producers.

Limited vitamin D sources in the diet

"Vitamin D is responsible for the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the intestine and regulates the calcium and phosphate metabolism. Therefore, it plays an important role in bone and tooth formation, "it says on the website of the producer.

Vitamin D contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and the maintenance of normal bones.

However, according to the Federal Nutrition Commission, vitamin D deficiency is common in all population groups.

According to the statements, among other things the reasons include a limited sun exposure, limited sources of vitamin D in the diet and a weak sunlight from late autumn to early spring.

New in the market

As stated in the communication, champignon mushrooms are conventional mushrooms that are held for a few seconds under a special lamp that produces light in the UV-B range.

The mushrooms thus produce vitamin D - a natural process, as mushrooms automatically enrich vitamin D with sunlight.

Champidor mushrooms have been available since September 10 in certain shops in Switzerland.

According to experts, mushrooms treated in the UK and Ireland have been on the market for a long time. (Ad)
