Warning of heat-related dehydration
DAK warns of heat-related dehydration.
Due to the enormously rising temperatures and the expected record temperatures on the weekend, the German Employees Health Insurance (DAK) warns of the health consequences of dehydration. Already last year, there were numerous inpatient treatments in the hospital in June and August, as patients suffered from acute dehydration.
Dehydration should not be taken lightly. If the body is not supplied with sufficient liquid, dehydration threatens, which can endanger life. Especially the elderly are in great danger because many simply forget to drink enough. Thus warns the general practitioner dr. Waltraud pastor: "Many forget to drink regularly and can easily dehydrate". The consequences can be severe, ranging from headache, inner restlessness, fatigue, confusion, to cardiovascular problems, unconsciousness, organ failure and, in the worst case, death.
Especially in the hot days should be enough liquid to be taken. Water is best for that, but that should not be too cold. Older people recommend the physician to create a drinking plan. For now it is important to drink 2 to 3 liters a day. "Drinking a glass of water, tea, or diluted fruit juice every hour," says Dr. Pastor, recommends eating watery fruits and vegetables, such as watermelons, cucumbers, tomatoes, and oranges be taken.
