Warning of hazardous coffee Vitaccino
Warning of dangerous coffee brand Vitaccino.
The State Investigation Office Rhineland-Palatinate warns of the harmful effects of a coffee. According to the investigation office, the dangerous coffee is distributed in several sports and fitness studios as well as on the internet in online shops. The instant coffee of the brand "Vitaccino" contains the banned substance sibutramine.
Sibutramine is actually a drug substance and was first used in 1999 for the treatment of obesity. However, the drug containing the active substance sibutramine was again stopped by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, as a long-term study showed that no significant weight loss took place in the subjects. On the contrary, the drug can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. At the time, the Scientific Committee of Inquiry stated: "The results of this study show that for obese patients with additional risk factors taking sibutramine is associated with an increased risk of developing serious cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke." The distribution of the drug was then stopped in the European Union. Even less, however, it is allowed to use the active substance in foods.
Now the forbidden substance became in the coffee sort „Instant coffee Vitaccino“ of the manufacturer Imperia Elita based in Wettenberg found at a food inspection. The company has meanwhile recalled the product imported from China from the retail sector. Nevertheless, the Rhineland-Palatinate state investigation office warns urgently against the consumption of the coffee, since it continues to be sold in sport studios. "People have died from the side effects of the drug in the past," a spokeswoman for the authorities warned on Monday. The appetite suppressant is especially dangerous for people with heart disease.
The enterprise „Imperia Elita“ said on their website that consumers should "not continue to consume existing goods". The company defends itself with the argument that they had the coffee previously judged by food law, before it came on the German market. A complaint did not exist at that time. However, an investigation by the official food inspection laboratory had discovered the prohibited substance. Then you have the coffee from the trade called back. According to the State Investigations Office, the offices became aware of the coffee, because a man from Karlsruhe had complained of heavy heart palpitations and dilated pupils after consumption. As a result, the person concerned alerted the authorities.
The coffee was not only distributed in Rhineland-Palatinate, but also in other states. How many packs in Germany are still in circulation, you can not exactly quantify. The distribution of coffee could still have legal consequences for the company. As the State Investigation Office announced, they had informed the prosecutor about the findings. (sb, 12.10.2010)
