Vitamin D is also important in autumn and winter

For the coming cold and dark months, it is urgent to take care of his vitamin D household. Ten minutes of sunshine are already enough for the body to produce this important and often underestimated vitamin.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin produced by the body even under the influence of sunlight, more specifically UV rays. The vitamin D contained foods such as fish or egg yolk can only cover a maximum of 20 percent of the required vitamin D needs. Vitamin D which acts as a hormone, „regulates calcium levels and is therefore essential for the health of human bones“, as the German Green Cross (DGK) reports in Marburg.

Summer is the best time for vitamin D storage
In summer, there is almost no vitamin D deficiency to worry about and especially fair-skinned people can within five to ten minutes to make their vitamin D household, when a quarter of the skin surface receives sunlight.

As the radiation intensity of the sun falls in autumn, so does vitamin D formation. Especially in the period from November to February, the light intensity is so low that the body can set the light synthesis in motion.

Vitamin D replenish memory
Experts advise to replenish vitamin D stocks before the winter months.
For months, the human body is able to store the needed vitamin in its muscle and adipose tissue. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment recommends that people with fair skin should have 10 to 20 minutes of daylight daily from September to October. For people with darker skin (type III), the daily requirement should be 15-25 minutes.

One distinguishes between 6 different skin types with different self-protection time with regard to the sun sensitivity. The recommended sun protection factor is accordingly dependent on the skin type and the so-called UV index. (Bn)
