Twice as many infectious bowel diseases since 2000

08/04/2015

Since 2000, the number of infectious bowel diseases in Germany has more than doubled. More than a quarter of a million Germans had to be hospitalized in a clinic in the previous year.

Three types of pathogens
The number of infectious bowel diseases has more than doubled in Germany, according to a message from the news agency dpa since 2000. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in Wiesbaden, in 2013 around 266,000 people had to be hospitalized in hospital. This is an increase of 108 percent in 13 years. The main causes are three types of pathogens. In 31,738 cases, the bacterium Clostridium difficile has caused an intestinal infection. This bacterium, which is also found in the body of healthy people, can excrete toxins by taking antibiotics, which can lead to intestinal disease.

Germs in poultry meat
In 25,529 cases Noroviruses have caused intestinal diseases and in 11,265 cases Campylobacter bacteria. The latter can be transmitted, inter alia, by poultry meat. So it was reported only a few weeks ago that continue to find too many germs in poultry meat, as well as Campylobacter. Infection with these bacteria may be accompanied by symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. (Ad)
