Contaminated drinking water in Prague hepatitis vaccine was ordered
Prague Health Department sends 4,000 children to the hepatitis A vaccine
Thousands of liters of waste water have entered the drinking water network in Prague, causing more than 2,600 people to have gastrointestinal complaints, according to news agency dpa. The health department had as a precaution ordered a vaccination against hepatitis A for more than 4,000 children in Prague. Affected are the two northern districts Dejvice and Bubenec.
According to information from the pipeline operator, up to 10,000 liters of wastewater are supposed to have reached the drinking water pipes via a leak, reports the "dpa". Over 2,600 people would have gone to see a doctor because of gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. The pathogens that have been identified include coliform bacteria and noroviruses. Although the water is now unencumbered again, nevertheless a precautionary vaccination of endangered children against the liver inflammation hepatitis A is carried out. Persons who have become infected as a result of the contamination should receive compensation, according to the "dpa".
Hepatitis A is often transmitted through contaminated drinking water
Hepatitis A is caused by hepatitis A viruses, which cause inflammation of the liver. Often the pathogens are transmitted by contaminated water or contaminated food. After an incubation period of a maximum of around one and a half months, unspecific symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting appear. Also, a slight bowel movement and the development of jaundice (jaundice) are in rare cases part of the symptoms. However, if the patient is adequately cared for, they usually do not face long-term health problems and hepatitis A often spontaneously heals. Chronic forms of the disease do not have to be feared.
