Survey majority for cannabis use as medicine
According to a survey, the majority of Germans have spoken out in favor of the use of cannabis in seriously ill people.
(15.08.2010) More and more people in Germany are in favor of using cannabis to treat seriously ill people. According to a representative survey by the institute "Emnid" on behalf of the "Cannabis as Medicine" initiative, around 75 percent of those surveyed said they would use active substances from the cannabis plant for the treatment or pain therapy of chronically ill people.
Components of the cannabis plant could be used, for example, to relieve spasticity in multiple sclerosis, as the organization said "cannabis as medicine". In some studies, a good influence of spasticity in the context of multiple sclerosis or cross-sectional diseases has been demonstrated. Symptoms such as acute pain, discomfort, trembling and coordination disorders of the muscles could be alleviated. As before, those affected must obtain the drug illegally on the black market and are criminalized despite medical use. Because in Germany, the legal medical use of cannabis is extremely complicated and difficult. In total, only 40 patients in Germany obtain cannabis legally from a pharmacy.
In the survey, a total of 1001 citizens were interviewed by telephone. It was noticeable that the broad agreement encompassed all social classes. A particularly high approval was the legalization of the health use of followers of the Greens, the Left and the FDP. The low level of acceptance among students was astonishing: only 55 percent of those surveyed favored the therapeutic use of cannabis.
The results of the survey in the further overview: About 65 percent of the respondents were in favor of assuming the costs from the health insurance companies. In addition, the acceptance of THC drugs has hardly anything to do with their own consumption of cannabis. For 73 percent of respondents who have never even used hashish or marijuana, but nevertheless for a medical clearance. (Sb)
