Ophthalmologists are therefore the first point of contact for a safe and successful operation“, explains Dr. Kaweh Schayan-Araghi, who regularly performs eyelid surgery as a medical director at the Artemis Eye Clinic in Frankfurt. „They are considered experts in terms of the interaction of eyelid and eye.“ Eyelid corrections - routine operations in ophthalmology - last for one hour and are usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Doctors correct this annoying wrinkles, bags or eyelids. Depending on the individual situation, they reduce or remove excess skin, slackened muscle tissue or displaced fat.

Required skin incisions put surgeons crescent-shaped in the middle of the upper lid so that they lie in the lid fold when the eye is open. While the laser is widely used in eye surgery, it is not used in the upper eyelid area. Since he can delay the scarring, ophthalmologists prefer instead to the classic scalpel. After surgery, eye surgeons seal wound edges with fine sutures, the threads of which they pull after a week.

In addition to cosmetic procedures for a fresher and alert appearance, especially medical indications require an eyelid surgery. „These include hail and barley grains, warts or annoying moles or even hanging eyelids that cause visual impairment“, affirms Schayan-Araghi. Tension losses of the upper lid, which occur so severely in severe cases that only the eyelashes prevent a decrease in excess skin, also require a correction to counteract field of vision restrictions. In the case of medical necessity, health insurance companies assume the operating costs. Otherwise, it is a cosmetic operation and patients bear the costs themselves. In any case, the treatment is in the hands of an ophthalmologist. Because the function of the eye depends on that of the eyelid: If surgeons remove too much of their skin during an upper eyelid tightening, the eye is no longer completely closed and is in danger of drying out.
