Studies on mucositis Natural chamomile extract and peppermint oil can help alleviate this
An inflamed oral mucosa affects food and fluid intake. Scientists are now studying the effect of chewing extracts of chamomile extract (Chamomilla recutita) and peppermint oil (Mentha piperita) on mucositis. Adult patients were all chemotherapeutically prepared for stem cell transplantation.
During the study, they rinsed their mouth three times a day after meals with the herbal rinses in addition to routine treatment. Although mucosal inflammation could not be prevented, the extent and duration of inflammation was significantly lower than in the control group receiving placebo.
The participants in the verum group also had less pain and suffered less from taste disorders and dry mouth. They also needed less additional medication with other pain and anti-inflammatory drugs.
