Study tomatoes can trigger gout attack
Meat and offal, but also alcohol can trigger a gout attack. Tomatoes are rarely scientifically discussed as triggers. A new study from New Zealand shows that gouty patients perceive tomatoes as the cause of gout attacks. Image: PhotoSG - fotolia
According to the study, tomatoes cause a higher level of uric acid in the blood and could therefore be responsible for a gout attack.
The scientists had asked about 2,000 New Zealanders who had been diagnosed with gout, which foods trigger a gout attack. After seafood, alcohol and red meat, tomatoes were named the fourth most common cause of gout attack.
Although it has not been proven that tomatoes actually trigger gout, they are certainly considered as a trigger for gout with regard to the increased uric acid level, the scientists summarize their findings. (Pm)
