Study: Bitter melon against breast cancer? Scientists at the Universities of Saint Louis and Hawaii have inhibited the division and growth of breast tumor cells during experiments in test tubes using bitter melon.

Scientists at the Universities of Saint Louis and Hawaii have inhibited the division and growth of breast tumor cells during experiments in test tubes using bitter melon. The research team of Professor Ratna Bhattacharyya Ray from the Department of Pathology and Internal Medicine at St. Louis University in Missouri, USA, has published the findings in the journal „Cancer Research“ in the current issue (23 Feb 2010). They suggest that substances in the bitter melon modulate signal transduction pathways that inhibit breast cancer cell growth. In the future, the preventive medicine for breast cancer could be used as an additive in foods. Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer among women in Germany. Having a naturopathic effective remedy in prevention would be a miracle for those who are later affected and the health system.

The bitter melon (also bitter cucumber or balsam pear) has been around for a long time because of their anti-cancer effect (anti-carcinogenic) in conversation. It belongs to the cucurbits and is more at home in tropical countries and is one of the normal foods. In her homeland, but also in Germany, Momordica charantia, as it is also called, is used in the context of natural medicine for viral diseases, complaints of the intestinal tract and diabetes mellitus type 2.

However, the researchers warn against too much euphoria, because the study has so far only been done in a test tube. Further studies on living organisms, such as mice, and clinical studies are needed to really clarify this. In terms of the interaction between bitter melon and worm infestation, fungal and herpetic diseases this should already be the case. (Thorsten Fischer, Naturopath Osteopathy, 24.02.2010)
