Exercise and calcium-rich diet reduce the risk of osteoporosis
15/01/2013
Osteoporosis, also known as bone loss, is one of the most common bone diseases in elderly patients. The bone density of those affected decreases continuously, which threatens fractures even at low loads. Women are much more affected by the disease than men. An adapted diet and sufficient exercise, the individual risk of osteoporosis can be significantly reduced, according to the latest press release of the Federal Self-help Association for Osteoporosis (BfO).
According to the BfO are „balanced diet and exercise in osteoporosis particularly important.“ Moderate exercise strengthens the bones and the movement also has a positive effect on the joints, the muscles and the cardiovascular system, reports the Federal Self-Help Association for Osteoporosis. In the diet, the intake of calcium is of particular importance in terms of osteoporosis prevention. While coffee is generally considered to be rather bad for the bones, latte coffee has a positive effect. The intake of one gram of calcium per day is recommended. In addition, according to the BfO should be paid with increasing age, especially on the intake of proteins, antioxidants and certain vitamins.
Calcium and Vitamins for Osteoporosis Prevention
According to estimates by experts in Germany, between six and eight million people suffer from osteoporosis. Those affected often have to cope with significant impairments such as reduced mobility and frailty in everyday life. According to the BfO older, underweight women are particularly at risk. By changing the diet and moderate sporting activities, however, the disease can often be counteracted in a relatively simple way. Calcium and high-quality proteins, such as those found in meat, fish and dairy products, have a very positive effect on the bones. Fruits and vegetables are also supposed to reduce the risk of osteoporosis through the vitamins they contain. A special meaning in relation to the bones is also attributed to the vitamin D, which is formed by sunlight in the human organism and can also be absorbed by certain foods or dietary supplements. In children, supplementation (supplementation) with vitamin D is often used to prevent bone diseases such as rickets or osteomalacia in adulthood.
To minimize the risk of osteoporosis BfO alcohol, cigarettes and coffee should be avoided if possible, but this does not apply to the coffee, as long as it is drunk with milk. Certain medications also need to be critically evaluated for osteoporosis risk, according to the experts. For example, cortisone can be taken over a longer period of time, weaken the bones permanently. However, the options for preventing osteoporosis are extremely complex and should be urgently used by hereditary risk patients. (Fp)
