Summer plague fruit flies So they can be expelled quickly
On muggy summer days fruit flies are a real scourge. The insects rely on ripe fruit and cost sweet juices, vinegar, beer and wine. This is not bad or harmful, but not appetizing. In addition, the fruits spoil faster because yeasts and putrefactive bacteria can be transmitted.
Most are representatives of the genus Drosophila, which are also called Taufliegen. They are two to three millimeters tall and darkly colored with red eyes. In two ways, the insects get into the kitchen: First, they fly through open windows when they smell ripe fruit. On the other hand, their eggs may already be on purchased goods or fruits from the garden.
The females are always looking for a place for oviposition. Ideal are rotten spots or stems of ripe fruit, which can be left within a few days about 400 eggs. The larvae hatch and are directly supplied with food. Within a few weeks, millions of small flies can emerge in this way.
To prevent such fruit fly invasion, a "trap" of fruit juice, vinegar and water is often recommended with a splash of dishwashing detergent. The flies drown in the liquid as the rinse reduces the surface tension. However, the application is controversial, as may attract more flies. An alternative are carnivorous plants in the kitchen where the insects stick and become digested. The scent of clove oil, basil, sandalwood and holy herb is also intended to banish fruit flies. Regular airing releases the air from fermenting gases.
"However, prevention is better than fighting," says Harald Seitz from aid info service. "Only buy small amounts of fruit in the summer and do not leave ripe fruits or juices open for longer." The fruit bowl can be protected from infestation with a close-meshed fly protection or a cotton cloth. "Soft fruit, mature apples and pears can also be stored in the fruit and vegetable compartment of the refrigerator," says Seitz.
Especially on the cleanliness in the kitchen you should pay attention in the summer. Wine and juice glasses are best rinsed directly, waste is removed and work surfaces carefully cleaned. The trash can should be emptied daily.
