Blow your nose, pull up or run your nose?

14/09/2011

When it gets uncomfortable outside, snore nose alarm reigns. Unpleasant, but not dangerous. At least if the cold is treated properly and viruses & Co. do not spread by false whining on. Even if it sounds strange: really wet cleaning needs to be learned.

„Too strong and one-sided snorting often leads to the fact that the nasal secretion, together with the pathogen contained in it, reaches the paranasal sinuses or the middle ear and triggers an inflammation there“, warns Uso Walter, practicing ear, nose and throat doctor and president of the HNOnet NRW. As a result, oppressive pain to forehead, cheekbones or in the ear as well as headache and fever threaten. Not exactly the fine kind, but healthier than strong trumpeting - pull up the slime. „This creates a negative pressure in the nose, which cleanses the sinuses and protects against infection“, explains Dr. Walter. The gastric acid makes pathogens harmless when swallowed.

Alternatively, decongestant nasal spray is suitable, which, contrary to all fears, does not make it dependent on short-term application to allow unhindered outflow of the nasal secretion. This can then easily catch with a handkerchief. In order not to spread the pathogens elsewhere, include the „Rotzfahnen“ immediately in the trash. Also important: wash hands thoroughly after each nose cleaning. Whoever heeds this advice will surely get away with a little cold. In spite of all caution, however, pain, pressure or even dizziness noticeable, consult an ENT doctor immediately. (Pm)
