Fast walking increases life expectancy

Anyone who does a lot and also has a fast walking pace lives longer. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh found this out in a study evaluation.
In older people, the speed of walking and walking difficulties can provide an indication of the upcoming life expectancy. As the US researchers at the University of Pittsburgh report, it is possible to measure, at a pace of at least 75 years, at pace, how high the subsequent life expectancy of the subject is. Specifically for the analysis of the data, the scientists evaluated a total of nine studies with around 34,000 study participants. Subjects who studied the walking pace were followed for between six and 21 years, depending on the study type. It was noticeable that life expectancy also increased with a rising walking speed. This result was found in all age groups of the subjects. However, this relationship was most evident in those who had already reached the age of 75 years. Here the context was most clearly measurable.
But not only on the walking pace was the risk of death measured. Other key factors, such as blood pressure, current and past cigarettes, past medical history, and body mass index (BMI), gave an indication of how high the average life expectancy of the participant is.
The results show once again how important exercise is in preventing life-threatening diseases. The researchers also write in the science magazine „JAMA“, in which the study results were published. „Walking requires energy and movement control and claims various organ systems such as the heart, lungs, circulation, nervous system or musculoskeletal system“, reports one of the study leaders. „A slow pace can reflect both damaged systems and increased energy expenditure.“ However, those who regularly exercise actively increase their performance and prevent serious illnesses such as diabetes.
