Mold discoveries Recall of organic tomato and vegetable juices initiated
Biosphere Vertriebs-GmbH has started a recall for tomato juice and vegetable juice from producer Biosphere. For certain batches, mold could not be ruled out. Consumers are requested not to consume the products concerned.
Suspected mold on bio-juices
The portal "Lebensmittelwarnung.de" of the federal states and the Federal Office of Consumer Protection is currently warning against the consumption of certain organic juices. As it says there, Biosphere Vertriebs-GmbH in Ebersburg recalls various products because of possible mold infestation. The following products of the biomanufacturing company Elm GmbH from Flieden are affected: Biosphere tomato juice in the 0.33 l Elopack with a best before 27.11.2016 and Biosphere vegetable juice in the 0.33 l Elopack with a best before 27.11.2016.

Consumers should not consume purchased products
Suspicion of microbial contamination may lead to bloating of the packaging and possible changes in taste due to unwanted microbiological metabolites. In the interests of precautionary consumer protection, consumers are asked to refrain from eating as a precautionary measure and to return the corresponding products to the point of sale. There, the purchase price will be refunded. According to the information, the products are offered in markets in Hesse and Berlin.
Health hazards due to mold
Mold in or on food does not necessarily have to endanger health. For example, noble cultures of cheese are harmless. But some mold fungi can form toxic metabolic products called mycotoxins. These can cause long-term damage to the liver or kidneys - but only if those affected are permanently exposed to these substances. In addition, the toxins increase the risk of certain cancers. "Mycotoxins can be eliminated neither by boiling nor by freezing," said Antje Gahl, nutritionist at the German Nutrition Society (DGE) in an earlier statement. Consumer advocates therefore advise again and again to check food supplies at home regularly, and to dispose of moldy or expired goods, if necessary. (Ad)
