Sartans protect against dementia
Sartans significantly reduce the risk of dementia
16/01/2013
In hypertensive patients, Sartan is the best protection against dementia. Researchers found that a good blood pressure setting can prevent every second dementia disease. Also, the cognitive performance before death is better.
Geriater around Dr. Ihab Hajjar from the University of Los Angeles took a closer look at brain autopsy results from 890 hypertensives from a national database.
In the cases studied, physicians diagnosed Alzheimer's disease before death in 41 percent of 133 people who died with Sartan. Of the 577 hypertensives with other antihypertensive drugs, 53 percent were affected, and out of 180 untreated patients with hypertension even 62 percent.
The neuropathological findings largely confirmed differences in clinical estimates and diagnoses before death. Depending on the criteria used, age and other risk factors, definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer's was less frequent among hypertensive patients with sartans by 32 to 35 percent than in hypertensive patients with other therapeutics and 40 to 45 percent less frequently than in hypertensive patients without therapy.
