Salmonella Danger: Organic Spices Recalled
Because of possible contamination with salmonella, various organic spices have been recalled at Aldi. In view of the health risk that Salmonella infection can bring, in particular for immunocompromised persons, consumption is strongly discouraged. The affected products can be returned for reimbursement of the purchase price in the respective sales outlet.


The manufacturer Merschbrock-Wiese Gewürz GmbH has started a recall for various organic spices, as these may be contaminated with salmonella. The spice blends were sold both at Aldi Nord and at Aldi Süd. Consumption is strongly discouraged. Anyone who has already used the spice mixture and discomfort such as abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and fever, should seek medical attention immediately, according to the manufacturer.

Salmonella detected in fennel
After salmonella has been detected in a sample of the product "organic fennel, ground", the manufacturer has started a recall campaign for all spice mixtures in which the fennel was also processed. Affected are the product lines "Good Bio" at Aldi Nord and "Bio" at Aldi Süd. In the sense of preventive consumer protection, the respective articles of the manufacturer have already been taken out of service, reports Aldi Nord.

The current recall applies to Aldi Nord for the product line "good organic", the "Bio Ras el Hanout fine spice mixture" with the best before date17. October 2019, the "Bio Curry Madras fine spice mixture" with the best before date November 11, 2019, the "Bio Asia Wok fine spice preparation" with the best before date March 1, 2020 and the "Bio Fennel ground" with the best before dates October 17, 2019 and 01 March 2020 are affected. The mentioned articles were sold in all branches of Aldi Nord.

Affected products at Aldi Süd
At Aldi Aldi Süd the "Bio Ras el Hanout fine spice mixture", the "Bio Curry Madras fine spice mixture" and the "Bio Asia Wok fine spice preparation" from the product line "Bio" are each affected by the expiration date February 2020. However, the products mentioned were only offered regionally in some stores at Aldi Süd.

"Still existing packs of the named items, with the appropriate best before date can of course be returned for reimbursement of the purchase price at the place of purchase," the manufacturer said. Further types of articles as well as other articles of the Merschbrock meadow spice GmbH are not affected by the recall. Aldi Nord emphasizes in its own communication that no other articles traded under the "GutBio" brand are affected as well.

Risk of salmonella infection
In view of the health risk that salmonella infections (salmonellosis) entail, the products mentioned should under no circumstances be consumed. Because the rod-shaped bacterium causes gastrointestinal infections with symptoms such as fever, weakness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Most of the infection is over after a few days, but especially in infants, immunocompromised and elderly people may experience increased symptoms, which in the worst case life-threatening proportions. "If the above symptoms appear after consuming the product, seek medical attention immediately," warns the manufacturer. (Fp)
