Seasonal depression cravings & need for sleep
Winter depression due to lack of sunlight
07/11/2014
Winter depression is one of the Seasonally Dependent Depression (SAD) and is by no means a myth. In fact, the absence of sunlight in autumn and winter causes many people to feel depressed, but this is different from real depression. In winter depression, those affected suffer from increased sleep and cravings, while a true depression usually leads to loss of appetite and lack of sleep. This is pointed out by Frank Bergmann of the Professional Association of German Nervous Physicians (BVDN) to the news agency „dpa“ down.
Overcome winter depression with light therapy
Typical signs of SAD are depressed mood, lack of vigor, fatigue, decreased performance, general listlessness and cravings, which often leads to weight gain. The cause of these symptoms is the lack of sunlight in autumn and winter. Therefore, people suffering from winter depression should take care to be aware of being outdoors often to compensate for the lack of light. Even when the sky is overcast, one hour in the fresh air is recommended daily. In addition, light therapy with a special 10,000 Lux lamp and high-dose St. John's wort, which has a mood-enhancing effect, can help SAD, explained Bergmann.

Many alternative practitioners also recommend the targeted use of sensory stimuli in the low-season. So warm and cheerful colors can improve the mood. Colorful curtains or pillows, but also colored clothes can be used consciously. In addition, colorful bath products, which are available for example in health food stores, have a positive effect on mental and physical well-being. Aroma oils for the bath water, the aroma lamp or as body oil can also lighten the mood. So lavender is considered soothing and balancing. In addition, bergamot, geranium, patchouli, verbena, palmerosa, neroli, rosewood, orange and lemon should counteract melancholy, depression and drive weakness. Depending on your preference, the appropriate scent should be chosen. More can be found in our article: "home remedies for winter depression".
Often the feeling already helps „to do something good“ against a short-term detuning. Healthy balanced diet, a visit to the sauna or a massage can significantly improve physical and mental well-being. However, if the symptoms persist beyond the winter, it is advisable to consult a specialist to rule out real depression, burnout or other mental illness. (Ag)
