Listeria monocytogenes especially dangerous for pregnant women
Listeria monocytogenes is a rod-shaped bacterium that causes the highly infectious disease listeriosis. This infectious disease, which has been notifiable in Germany since 2001, is found worldwide, but primarily affects pregnant women and their unborn children, newborns, the elderly and persons with a weakened immune system, for example as a result of AIDS. The transmission of bacteria in humans is usually over spoiled or contaminated food (milk, cheese, meat, etc.), but can also be done by contact with contaminated soil or during pregnancy through the placenta or during childbirth. Listeriosis is often asymptomatic or has flu-like symptoms in people with intact immune systems, but it can also lead to severe gastrointestinal inflammation as a result of consuming contaminated food. However, the disease is particularly dangerous for people with weak immune systems and in pregnancy, because in this case it can come by the infection of the unborn child to a miscarriage, stillbirth or a newborn listeriosis, other possible consequences include a meningitis (meningitis ) and sepsis.
