Coli bacteria cause recall for two French cheeses

Two types of French cheeses are recalled because of possible coliform bacteria. When eating threatened severe gastrointestinal discomfort, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Affected are according to the message of the news agency „dpa“ the sorts „Saint Marcellin“ and „Saint Felicien“ the French dairy Fromageries L'Etoile. The company Vallée-Verte, which sells the cheese in this country, have recalled the two cheeses for the detection of coliform bacteria.

The recall is valid for the batches of the two cheeses with the best before date from 4 August to 3 September 2014. The cheese was available in organic stores nationwide, with Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria being the main sales countries. Consumers are advised to return or destroy them at the store, and in no case eat them, as they may experience significant indigestion when eating the cheese.

The proven intestinal bacteria from the genus Escherichia coli can cause various health problems, ranging to bloody diarrhea and significant impairment of kidney function, the news agency reports „dpa“. Especially children are at risk. Bacteria of the genus Escherichia coli were also responsible for the EHEC epidemic in 2011, which affected thousands of people and killed more than 50 people. (Fp)
