Back pain can often be successfully treated by exercise

Low back pain is one of the most common health complaints in this country. Experts advise sufferers mostly not to be overly concerned about complaints, but rather to move. This can in many cases help to relieve the pain.

Most back problems are muscular

In Germany, there are more and more treatments for back problems. Although low back pain may have psychological causes in some cases, health experts say more than 80 percent of those with back problems are muscular. Experts therefore usually advise exercises to avoid back pain. If symptoms have already set in, sometimes special back pain exercises can help. As a rule, those affected are advised not to spare too much, but to move regularly.

Exclude dangerous diseases

Almost every person has to deal with back pain at some point. Going to the doctor is often inevitable.

Like Prof. Dr. Bernd Kladny, Secretary General of the German Society for Orthopedics and Traumatology (DGOU), stated in a statement that at the beginning of each treatment there is a detailed survey and a competent physical examination.

"We deliberately check possible warning signs that indicate a preventable dangerous disease as the physical cause of the pain," said the expert.

According to the information, 85 to 90 percent of those affected did not find such warning signs.

"Then, for the time being, we do not need an imaging examination such as X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging," explains Kladny.

Such complaints are often too early and unnecessarily x-rayed anyway, critics say.

Exercise is the best therapy

Movement is the best therapy for non-specific pain, as stated in the DGOU Communication.

If necessary, the patient can take painkillers or anti-inflammatories so that he can move again.

"This is how most acute non-specific low back pain disappears after four to six weeks," says Kladny.

If this is not the case, it should be checked if imaging is not necessary. According to the experts, this also applies if the doctor has the definite suspicion that there is a physical cause during the initial examination.

Triggers for the persistent symptoms may include signs of wear or a herniated disc.

Operation only in exceptional cases

If warnings or a reliable indication of a specific disease are found, then expert treatment of the underlying cause is needed.

According to DGOU, the treatment does not necessarily have to be an operation - on the contrary: "If no alarms occur, such as paralysis, blood poisoning or lack of control of the bowel and bladder, conservative therapy - with pain, exercise, physical therapy and other procedures - is the standard "Write the experts in the message.

Only when such non-surgical procedures bring no relief, the doctor and patient could discuss the advantages and disadvantages of surgery.

"In order to effectively treat low back pain, it requires a clearly defined, stringent plan," stresses DGOU President Prof. Dr. med. Dr. Werner Siebert. (Ad)
