The Westfälische Pumpernickel recently received the award from the EU Commission and was registered as a "protected geographical indication" (g.g.A.). It is a blue-yellow EU seal. Consumers should pay attention when buying if they want to buy an original and healthy product.


The "Westfälische Pumpernickel g.g.A." is a pure natural product. It is made after centuries of tradition from grist and grains of rye, water and salt. Only yeast, malt or sugar beet syrup are still allowed. In no case may preservatives or other chemical additives be used. The production process is still the same as half a millennium ago. It requires a lot of care and feeling and more time - a very special asset in our globalized world.

At least 16 hours of Westphalian pumpernickel in the steam baking chamber with overpressure, but at only about 100 degrees cooked rather than baked. This gives it the vitamins and fiber, gives it color and structure, making it juicy and slightly sweet.
