Psyche dizziness can be triggered by anxiety disorders
Dizziness can indicate an anxiety disorder
Doctors urge: Frequent dizziness must always be taken seriously. Dizziness is not an independent disease, but a symptom with multiple - also mental - causes. It helps some people to know that, but you should not shy away from going to the doctor.
Dizziness can have psychological causes
You feel insecure on your feet or as if you have lost contact with the ground: dizziness is widespread and can express itself in very different ways. He may have physical reasons behind it, but there are also mental causes of dizziness, for example in the context of an anxiety disorder. The Professional Association of German Nervous Physicians (BVDN) has pointed this out. Frank Bergmann from the BVDN explained on the information portal "neurologen-und-psychiater-im-netz.org": "In many cases, a vertigo attack is associated with restlessness and sometimes with nausea. Walking normally feels like drunk swaying. "
Physical triggers must be excluded
It can often help those affected to know about the psychological causes of the dizziness. It is also very important to deal with this: "In the effort to deliberately control balance, those affected tend to experience intense self-awareness and self-observation. This self-observation spiral can maintain and reinforce the dizziness, "says Bergmann, according to a news agency dpa. First of all, physical causes of dizziness must be ruled out. For this, a visit to various doctors may be required: first to the family doctor and then if necessary to the ENT specialist or neurologist.
Dizziness is felt by anxiety patients as threatening
However, if no physical cause is found, the BVDN advises you to contact a neurologist or psychiatrist. The dizziness often begins with special mental stress in the partnership, at work or in the family. People with anxiety disorders often perceive dizziness as so threatening because they suspect physical triggers behind it: for example, diseases of the cervical spine, circulatory disorders or cardiovascular problems. In their perception, then, dizziness is the cause of anxiety, although it is actually the other way round.
A behavioral therapy can help
In addition to the knowledge of the cause, according to the expert, behavioral therapies have proven to be helpful. "An important part of the treatment is also psychotherapy, in the search for the causes and triggers of dizziness symptoms and worked on the solution of the involved inner and outer conflicts," said Bergmann on the Internet portal. It may also be possible to use medications such as antidepressants. In addition, it is known that endurance sports can help against anxiety disorders. According to scientific studies, lavender oil can also be used to combat anxiety disorders. (Ad)
