Eggs are already on the menu for breakfast for many people. If you need to keep an eye on your cholesterol level, you should pay attention to the preparation. The consumer initiative e.V. in Berlin advises to eat eggs best cooked or poached. This is healthier than adding fats such as butter or oil while roasting. Also on bacon in the scrambled eggs should be waived at high blood lipid levels.
Prepare eggs at will but eat less often
On the occasion of Easter, the consumer initiative e.V. gives tips for the healthy preparation of eggs. Anyone who wants to eat low-cholesterol and healthy should, therefore, resort to boiled or poached eggs. This is reported by the expert Alexandra Borchard-Becker from the consumer initiative e.V. to the news agency „dpa“.
Since eggs already contain a lot of cholesterol, additional fats, such as butter, can lead to a further increase in cholesterol when frying. However, if you do not want to do without fried eggs and scrambled eggs, you should use vegetable oils instead of butter and leave out fatty side dishes. Since most of the egg yolk contains cholesterol, omelettes can only be made with egg whites. Cream and regular milk can also be replaced with low-fat milk. Nevertheless, Borchard-Becker advises: „I recommend to prepare eggs at will once a week and then take a break afterwards.“
When shopping, look for fresh eggs from organic or free-range
Generally, however, the consumption of eggs is not a problem for healthy people, as informed by the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture. However, diabetics and those with problems with lipid metabolism and cholesterol should pay attention to the amounts consumed.
Because of the risk of Salmonella poisoning, eggs that are no longer quite fresh should be thoroughly cooked for safety, advises Borchard-Becker. So it is advisable to also egg yolks fried eggs, if the eggs have already been stored for over a week in the refrigerator.
Her colleague Laura Gross has tips for buying eggs especially for Easter. „Anyone who thinks of chickens when buying Easter eggs should rather buy fresh eggs from organic or free range and dye them themselves“, so the experts. But even with the color care is required. In general, the dye packs contain food colors that are approved as additives. Nevertheless, these can trigger sensitive symptoms in people allergy-like symptoms when they penetrate through fine cracks in the eggshell into the interior and eaten, as informed by the consumer initiative e.V.
