No more chronic diseases due to coffee
People who drink coffee daily even reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes
24.02.2012
Coffee lovers can breathe easy: According to a study, the often considered unhealthy hot drink is better than its reputation: coffee does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease or cancer. Another surprising result of the study: People who drink coffee daily even reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Coffee is healthier than his reputation
According to a study by the German Institute for Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrücke (DifE), it does not matter whether coffee containing caffeine or caffeine is consumed. In both cases, the researchers led by Heiner Boeing and Anna Flögel were able to prove that the consumption of coffee does not increase the risk of cardiovascular and cancer diseases.
Increased coffee consumption no risk for chronic diseases
For the long-term study, nutritional and lifestyle data and medical analyzes of 42,000 adults were evaluated. In the average nine-year observation period, 1,801 subjects were diagnosed with cancer, 394 study participants suffered a heart attack, 310 had a stroke, and 1,432 study participants first developed type II diabetes. Comparing the data of people who drank more than four cups of coffee per day with those who consumed little coffee, the researchers found that increased coffee consumption did not increase the risk for the typical chronic diseases of western industrialized countries. In addition, the study found that people who drank a lot of coffee had a reduced risk for type 2 diabesta. „Our study results are consistent with the results of recent prospective studies from the USA“, reports Anna Flögel. The study was in the science magazine “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition“ released.
Heiner Boeing points out that people who tolerate coffee well should drink it as well. However, no one should necessarily start drinking coffee because of the trial results. More important, „take care to eat enough wholemeal products, low meat and a lot of fruits and vegetables, not to smoke and to move sufficiently“, explains the expert.
Coffee reduces the risk of stroke in women by 25 percent
Even a cup of coffee a day can also significantly reduce the risk of having a stroke. This was the result of scientists from the „Karolinksa Institute“ in Stockholm as part of a long-term study. Since 1997, Swedish researchers led by Susanna Larsson have been investigating women's coffee consumption and the onset of brain infarction. The study involved 35,000 women aged 49 to 83 years. During the investigation, regular surveys were conducted on coffee consumption. These results were then compared to the frequency of strokes. The researchers found that stroke risk „was reduced by 25 percent if the participating women drank more than a cup of coffee a day“. Other studies indicate that head content is an important factor. While the Potsdam study found no difference between caffeine-free and caffeine, other research points to positive effects of the substance. "Patients with heart conditions such as palpitations, high blood pressure or other circulatory diseases should consult their GP regarding their daily coffee consumption." (Ag)
