New study: Sugary drinks carcinogenic?
Scientists at the University of Minnesota have found in a study of 60,000 people that two or more soft drinks per week increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.
Researchers led by Mark A. Pereira from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Minnesota, studied the consumption of beverages such as orange and lemon soda and cola containing sugar in about 60,000 people in Singapore for 14 years. It was noticeable that the number of participants in the study who consumed two or more of these drinks weekly increased among the 140 cases in which pancreatic cancer occurred.
In addition to the risk of weight gain, this may be another factor that needs to be reconsidered before consuming sugary drinks. Because the cancer of the pancreas (pancreas) does not occur so often, but is very deadly. Five years after the diagnosis, only about five percent of those affected are usually alive. The pancreas produces insulin, which lowers the amount of sugar in the blood.
Pereira and colleagues suggest that the high sugar content of the drinks requires an increase in the insulin level and thus an increased work of the pancreas. This could cause them to grow, which can then also be unchecked (cancer).
They published their findings in the current issue of the journal „Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention“ (February 2010; 19 (2)). In Europe, sugar substitutes are often used. Therefore, it is not clear whether the results are transferable to this continent. Further studies have yet to confirm whether the pancreatic cancer cases have other causes.
In naturopathy has been advocating for a long time to restrict the consumption of strong sugary drinks and to absorb more liquid without additives (water). Incidentally, researchers did not find any association with pancreatic cancer with fruit juices. (Thorsten Fischer, Naturopath Osteopathy, 08.02.2010)
