Fibromyalgia: Traditional Chinese medicine provides relief

30/08/2011

When muscles and joints hurt and patients report a persistent cold and fever, it is often fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Confusingly diverse and frequently occurring symptoms characterize the disease known as soft tissue rheumatism. In addition to high sensitivity to pain, patients suffer from, inter alia, sleep disorders and constant fatigue. Chronic mucosal irritations, depression and a generally labile state of mind are also among the typical features. Fibromyalgia sufferers often suffer unbearably long, can barely handle everyday tasks and report on numerous unsuccessful doctor visits. What many do not know: Traditional Chinese medicine is a serious alternative.

Due to the lack of treatment success, orthodox physicians often refer patients to psychiatrists and classify causes as „psychosomatic“ conditionally. Mental illness factors do not exclude Chinese medicine, but they consider FMS primarily as a somatic disorder and see the origin of infections. „In about two-thirds of cases of fibromyalgia we are already achieving a lasting improvement“, reports Christian Schmincke, TCM expert and head of the clinic at the Steigerwald. „We regard fibromyalgia as an aberrant immunological control. It usually starts with unrecovered infections“. So stay cold processes stuck in patients at an early stage. Fever, phlegm discharge and regeneration do not take place as subsequent phases.

Continuous and unsuccessful defensive attempts cost strength and lead to a dangerous habituation of the body to this condition. In the case history, therefore, the focus is on the defensive behavior of the organism against infections. After extensive diagnosis, a treatment tailored to the individual medical history takes place. Chinese medicine is based on five pillars. „Acupuncture and moxibustion stimulate energy channels of the body, Tuina massages provide better vital tension and with meditative and gymnastic Qigong exercises we stabilize body energies and relieve tension. The vegetarian diet favors healing processes through a mild intestinal toxicity“, explains Dr. Schmincke. Therapies with Chinese medicines - also known as phytotherapy - form the basis. They mobilize and activate the immune system and are considered the most important treatment method. Thus, Chinese acute formulations reactivate first in fibromyalgia patients „old“ Infections that the immune system has not successfully overcome. In some patients, this leads to a sudden bronchitis or cystitis after years. This so-called re-actualization allows the elimination of old diseases and directs them out of the body, for example via mucous membranes. In addition, at the Clinic at the Steigerwald, therapeutic discussions take place, which continuously clarify the illness and give patients assistance with regard to lifestyle and nutritional behavior.
