Herbal medicines for prostate

(02.08.2010) When men often „have to“, is the initially suspected bladder usually innocent: Behind the urinary urgency is usually a benign enlargement of the prostate gland prostate. In Germany, traditionally herbal medicines are used against the annoying complaints.

Since 2004, these drugs are no longer reimbursed by the statutory health insurance, the affected must therefore pay for the therapy itself. Is it now the thorough consultation in the pharmacy, the recommendations of the treating physicians or the increasing awareness of the patients: the purchase decision of the affected patients surprisingly often no longer depends solely on the price of the herbal preparation, but more often on its scientifically proven Quality. This shows an analysis of buying behavior over the past five years (IMS Health, Pharmascope).

In the current Red List are the therapy of the „Benign prostate syndrome“ (BPS) over 30 pharmacy-only herbal supplements. According to the guidelines of the German Society for Urology (DGU) extracts of sawtooth palm fruits (Serenoa repens, Sabal serrulata) and nettle roots (Urtica dioica) or their combination are well documented and therefore recommendable.

As might be expected, after the anti-paternal regulation came into effect in 2004, the sales of all herbal medicines decreased noticeably. Initially, it also hit the well-documented prostate preparations. However, this has changed in the last two years: While the overall market for these drugs is stagnating, patients are increasingly choosing the best-studied combination drug.

„The current data is encouraging evidence of the fact that consumers today are more and more willing to reward proven competence“, The Board of the Committee for Research Natural Medicine e.V. (KFN) comments on the results of the current market analysis. (Pm, KFN 13/2010)
