Naturopathy: With pepper against menstrual disorders

In gynecology / naturopathy, the use of chaste tree as a medicinal plant is becoming increasingly popular. Particularly in menstrual disorders, but also in the absence of period, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or painful and / or swollen breasts in women, the plant is now used more frequently and noticeably reduces the symptoms in the majority of patients.

The search for the origin of the name of the plant goes back to the Middle Ages, because as the taste can be described as spicy-hot, it was used by monks as a pepper substitute. But the chaste tree, which belongs to the family of vervain plants, had another effect: Since the plant in the Greek mythology symbolic of the chaste marriage was, it was consumed later in the Middle Ages primarily in the men's monasteries, the libido of the monks in check and thus became a symbol of abstemious monastic life.

Even today, the plant is still said to weaken the sex drive especially in men - and thus colloquially also called chaste tree or chaste lamb. Although the chaste tree can be used very successfully for complaints, little is known about the exact effectiveness. It is clear that the fruits contain essential oils, bitter substances, fatty oil and phytochemicals and the pepper thereby u.a. stimulates the production of progesterone (luteal hormone), which promotes pregnancy. In addition, since ingestion can lower high levels of prolactin, which in turn may lead to disruption of egg maturation, chaste tree pepper is also considered to be particularly effective in women who can not become more volatile.

Under certain circumstances, cholera can cause side effects such as reddening of the skin or rashes, which is relatively rare and otherwise quickly disappears after stopping the intake. Since the plant affects the sex hormones, however, should be on puberty and pregnant and breastfeeding women
In any case, as a precaution, refrain from use. However, if you have serious and ongoing complaints, you should consult a gynecologist. (Heilpraxisnet.de, 13.12.2009)
