Lidl Dioxinfund in organic eggs
Dioxin burden in organic eggs? The Supermarkette Lidl takes as a precaution all organic eggs from the shelves.
(07.05.2010) Ironically, organic eggs are suspected to be contaminated with dioxin. Because increased dioxin levels were measured in chicken feed, the supermarket chain "Lidl" takes all organic eggs from the Sortment as a precaution. The background may be due to the fact that dioxin-loaded maize comes from Ukraine and was sold to organic farms by a Dutch trader. This could have landed the dioxin in the chicken feed. The product was sold between December 2009 and February 2010 throughout Europe.
Meanwhile, the health authorities in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia are testing chicken feed and eggs from organic poultry farms. A spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection in Oldenburg confirmed that in two out of thirteen feed samples in Lower Saxony an increased dioxin value had been found. In egg samples from twelve examined organic farms, the dioxin contamination was clearly too high in two samples.
In North Rhine-Westphalia also appropriate investigations are carried out. So far, however, no precise findings have become known. Final results can only be expected in the middle of next week, according to a spokeswoman for the consumer protection office. The discounter Lidl, however, plays it safe and takes all organic eggs from the range throughout Germany until clear results are known. (Sb)
