Currywurst and pizza reduce the condition of hikers

05/17/2013

Hiking is one of the most popular leisure activities of the Germans. As spring approaches, it's hard to wait to pack your hiking backpack. As the DRK mountain rescue informs in Berlin, hikers should pay particular attention to light food and plenty of fluid. High-fat food such as Currywurst and Pommes can quickly reduce the condition.

For hikers vegetables and potatoes instead of currywurst and pizza
Hiking is exhausting and demands a lot from the body depending on the chosen route. Therefore, hikers should pay attention not only to sufficient fluid, but also to light, healthy food. Anyone who feasts on hearty currywurst or pizza must expect an unpleasant feeling of fullness in the stomach and a reduced condition. Therefore, the DRK mountain rescue advises for a good start to the hiking day to muesli, fruit, yogurt or wholemeal bread with honey or cold cuts. During lunch, vegetables and potatoes or other carbohydrate suppliers such as rice or pasta are suitable. Anyone who has an appetite in the meantime is most likely to fall back on fruit, granola bars or bread.

For a full-day hike adults should take at least two liters of liquid according to DRK mountain rescue. For children, even one and a half to two times the amount is recommended. However, hikers should do without undiluted juices and sodas. In addition to mineral water apple cherries and herbal or fruit teas are more suitable. Even if the visit to a rest stop is planned in between, „One liter of water per person should always be included as an emergency ration“, advises the DRK mountain rescue.

A small emergency equipment is also part of every Wandertoure. This includes a first aid kit consisting of plaster, bandages, elastic bandage, disinfectants, scissors, tweezers and personal medication. In order to protect injured persons from hypothermia, a rescue blanket should also be included.

Last but not least, a garbage bag is included in the hiking backpack to transport plastic bottles and other trash back to the next location, where the waste can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

Hikers should pay attention to sun protection in addition to light fare
Even if the temperatures in the valley are not yet summery, hikers should watch out for sun protection. The higher the mountain, the more aggressive the sun's rays are. Even when it is cloudy, especially children with sunscreen with a high sun protection factor of at least 20 should be creamed. Anyone who is traveling in the mountains, should never give up sun hat and sunglasses.

Comfortable clothing and firm, already worn footwear are mandatory on every hike. The DRK mountain rescue advises the so-called „onion principle“: Several layers of clothing can be put on or put on as needed. Two thin pairs of socks are to help prevent blisters on the feet, so that the friction does not develop between the skin and the sock but between the two layers of socks.

When hiking with children pay attention to appropriate walking route
When hiking in the mountains, the arrival day should not be started with an extended tour. Because the body needs time to get used to the changing climate at altitude. Also on the second day hikers should decide for a moderate hike such as a tour of the valley. Anyone wandering with children must, according to DRK mountain rescue pay attention to appropriate routes. Too ambitious milestones on children often have a demotivating effect. In addition, there is the highest accident risk due to overconfidence. The pace should always dictate the slowest participant. The duration of a hike indicated in hiking guides is usually not valid for children. Families should therefore plan at least twice the time for a tour. (Ag)
